He was arguably the MVP of the whole namek saga. Everything after namek explodes aged badly with hindsight. The plot stays advancing due to bad decision making by the good guys. It was so bad in that regard that I almost don’t want to even acknowledge the whole thing. He was excellent in the first two sagas.this

This has been explained before but this is because they aren't "good guys" especially the team leader Goku and anti hero Vegeta. Goku is looking for a good fight above most else and Vegeta is just looking to surpass Goku.
