we’re not downplaying anything. 1 all star appearance in 6 seasons, 0-12 playoff record. He wasn’t borderline anything until Kobe. He was a talented player who got the Kobe stimulus. Pau was not a tier 1 big man before the Lakers.

Pau was just an international Hall of Famer before Kobe. Playing with Kobe turned him into a real NBA Hall of Famer. Pau had Hall of Fame talent all along. But he was soft and got punked by other PFs. Kobe made him tougher. And that is how they ended up winning.
Pau was always good. But he would never be looked at the way he's looked at right now if he never played with Kobe.

There are different tiers of stars. D-Wade and Kyrie are on another tier from Gasol and Bosh. One level is the superstar tier. The other level is just the all-star tier. Pau was never in the superstar tier. He was always just in that all-star tier. For most of his career he was around a Top 15 player. He might have been at the bottom of the Top 10 during the championship years with Kobe. But he was never looked at as a truly elite player. Kobe and Gasol were not a dynamic duo. Kobe and Shaq were a dynamic duo.

People were upset because it was Kwame Brown being traded for Pau and nobody respected the fact Marc Gasol was part of that trade.
Looking back now it was an even trade. Grizzlies got Marc Gasol who turned into an all-star caliber center himself. And then they were able to free up enough cap space to sign Zach Randolph. The Gasol trade actually turned them into the solid playoff team we saw in the early 2010s.
That was not a bad trade. It was close to even.
