I think the authentic Kobe is easy to see. He was an incredibly motivated and driven individual that tried to be the best at everything he put his focus on. For most of his life that was basketball and he sacrificed everything to become the best basketball player he could be. After he got a family and retired he shifted his motivation and drive to being the best father he could be and to try and inspire people with his story-telling.
I think most people just can't comprehend being as motivated and driven in anything as Kobe was at basketball so he always seemed off to them. To me it was easy to see who he really was. A guy with unmatched drive and ambition.
