In Amar'e's defense, the Suns DID sign Steve Nash and Joe Johnson in the time he was there. Whether that was due to him or not is another story, but it's not like he turned players away.
Knicks fans are right though. Their ambitions were aiming higher than David Lee. It's not that Knicks fans didn't like him or anything like that, but the idea was to do what Miami wound up doing. Not only did David Lee not fit that vision, he got in the way of it, especially if the Knicks wanted someone like Amar'e or Bosh. Had the Knicks come back with a maxed out Lee, Knicks fans would have called Walsh and the whole 2010 plan a bust.
Now do I think Amar'e was key in getting Melo here? HELL NO. Melo would have come here anyway, but remember, Melo wasn't NY's first choice. He became the next best target once the LeBron dream died. Since they already signed Amar'e, they figured they could add onto him. Having Lee instead would have made things way more muted than they were, since let's be honest, Lee isn't gonna be some great magnet towards signing guys (it's like how people thought LeBron wanted Gallinari to stick around in case he went there)
i remember lebron going out of his way to talk to gallo after a game and everyone being "thats a good sign, he wants to play with gallo"
good times
