If not the worst one, it's really close
It's fascinating to revisit the pockets of history you remember, 20 years later or so. In real time, this was a let down for everyone. In hindsight, you can kinda see Jay transitioning into his next phase, which wasn't all that smooth in 2006, or 2007. I don't know if he knew what he was doing, 100%. There was also something like he needed a big album for the label. So he knocked on out real quick. The whole rap game was in a transitional phase in 2006. Between 50 teetering on the edge of staleness, and the souths rapid ascent, NYC rap was out of step.
The album has a very relaxed feel, there's almost no urgency, or edge, besides Beach Chair (melodramatic) or Minority Report (undercooked) it's glossy and big budget, while being very bland, and inoffensive. Jay is doing that whisper flow way too much. He refuses to like attack a beat the way he used to. There's maybe two tracks that feel like a good album, Do U Wanna Ride and The Prelude.
