Copping the old school 5th gen Paperwhite (2021) since it still lets users download books. Gonna throw them into calibre

the new ones don't???
Nope:

I've never owned a kindle, but buy most books there (and copped a ton of free ones), so I've got +400 (mostly unread) books stuck w/ Amazon.

I feel like this is the first step towards completely removing the option, so I made the purchase on eBay for $50. Sucks that I have to 'free' books I already own, but I've got enough books that it's worth it.

Email to kindle is still an option, I use that from time to time via calibre so that works.

also may want to read this. I thought you were saying the kindle only allows books purchased through amazon to work.

I download all my Amazon purchased Kindle books and strip the DRM off them to make backup copies. Lucky for me I keep a couple Kindle Voyage units and they still have that feature.

When they cut that off I'll have to start buying epub books from other sellers and sending them to the Kindle. I don't trust Amazon for permanent access to the books I've purchased which I own over 300 on Kindle. At the same time I love whispersync that keeps my progress in their books in the cloud to sync between devices.

I can't justify it. But I rarely **buy digital books.

If it's online, it's free :yeshrug:

I usually dl and convert to PDF and use on my phone, android tablet, iPad or surface then I can annotate, note, screenshot, bookmark, etc.

Ive bought some books on kindle but I feel the infrastructure is restrictive, I don't feel like I own those.

I just got mine today and the bottom of the screen is noticeably darker than the rest. People are calling it a yellow band. I went on the Kindle subreddit and people are pretty upset about it. I can live with it.
