Slightly related, a Nigerian friend of mine told me where he's from it's not unusual to refer to any woman your senior as "Mama" or "Ma". So freshman year of college, his first year here, he had sent our teacher (who's a sister) an email and instead of addressing it Professor so and so, his intro was "Hey Ma.." :dead: Now he didnt mean no disrespect cause its normal where he comes from, but here it has a different interpretation :usure: Teacher called him to her office and ripped ol boy a new one :wow:

My dad calls my grandmother by her first name. When he was a child, she told him to call her by her first name because she felt a boy/ grown man should not be calling her "Mom" or "Ma".

Yall are weird. Calling your parent mom and dad..unless your in your own house maybe surrounded by siblings would be the only appropriate place to call them that.

If yall were havin a one on one there really isn't a reason to address them at all (eye contact should suffice). If your in public or at a family reunion. You couldn't expect to be like "hey dad" "Daddy" or "mama!" To get their attention. Everyone who has kids would look...granted if they are attentive they'd recognize your voice and respond. But in that same instance saying "Leroy!" Or "whatyamoms name is" would be just as appropriate. When referring to them it would be appropriate to say "give this to my mom" or "I'm going to the store for my mom" etc

How do y'all feel about this? I think its very disrespectful. This female I know calls her mom by her 1st name. I kinda cringed the other day when I heard her say to her mom "Dianne, u trippin if u buy that car." I sat there with the:what: face. The mom didn't seem to mind either. I later asked the chick why she called her mom by 1st name, she said that's how its always been and her and her mom are cool like that.:manny:

Do any of u guys call your parents by their 1st name or know people that do? Do u think its disrespectful?

For some odd reason I pictured a white girl in my head. If that was a black chick and you asked her why she called her mom by her first name she would probably angrily reply, "*GROWL* NON OF UR fukkING BUSINESS. I DO WHAT I WANT. IM AN INDEPENDENT BLACK WOMAN fukk U!!" Of course this is based off personal experience (yes this really happened to me).
