KG was the leading scorer, 4th quarter scorer, led in FGAs, and was the defensive anchor during the Celtics championship Playoff run. Something Dirk could never do, because he's a one way player with holes in his all around game that KG didn't have. But keep overhyping your great white hope

You can use this same argument against KG as well, and it’s more damning.

Dirk needed some defensive role players around him to win a title.

KG needed a legit number 1 scoring option paired with him to do the same. And the greatest 3pt shooter ever up until that point.

So who really needed more help?

Nobody was ever winning anything with KG as the go-to number 1 guy. You can’t say the same for Dirk. And the only reason this convo exists is because the refs went wild in the 06 Finals. Without that, this isn’t even a convo worth having.

I don’t think there’s any doubt about KG being the better all-around player. Nobody has ever disputed that.

The issue is that offense and defense are not weighted the same in basketball. One is much much more valuable than the other. Steph Curry is not considered an All Time Great player because of his two way ability…

A guy like Shawn Marion or Richard Jefferson were probably more well-rounded than say a guy like Allen Iverson or TMac or Melo.

Jaylen Brown is more well rounded than Luka.

But it’s clear who the better players are in those comparisons. Who is more valuable and desirable to have on your team. Who can anchor a playoff contender and be your number 1 guy. Who GMs would take to build their franchise around.

That’s the issue that comes up with KG compared to Dirk. KG was never that guy you could rely on to get you buckets down the stretch or be the offensive anchor for a contender. And that’s THE most valuable asset in the NBA. Damian Lillard isn’t valued so highly because he locks guys down on the defensive end…

It’s easier to find defensive role players to surround an offensive talent than it is to find a number 1 scoring option to complement a well-rounded player. This is undeniable.

Plus, even with KGs great defense, he got absolutely abused by Shaq, Duncan, and Dirk throughout his Wolves tenure in the West. fukk am I supposed to do with his “well-roundedness” if quality opposing front court players are still feasting against him?
