This may have already been mentioned, but I chopped it up with my homie last night and he pointed out to me:

At the end of every song he added a line from the poem that's on Mortal Man
:mindblown:
I gotta listen to the whole album again now and peep that

Yup. It's the glue that brings the whole album together.

I love the album but these kids are on some shyt. You can tell who is still really young and hasn't learned to truly feel music yet

But they will defend themselves with the same blah blah blah. We were all young once, I know how it was.

Simplicity can be brilliant as well. Just as brilliant as complexity.
How many mics you give this album

A few days ago I would have told you 4 mics, but on my last listen some of the tracks started to click better so I'm up to 4.25 mics. Leaning towards 4.5 mics.

I will never go higher than that, because the album just doesn't hit me emotionally at all. Just off of ambition and artistry it is a 5 mic album, but it aint personally connecting on that level for me

There is an indescribable feeling of soul that I have to feel from albums that get 4.75 or 5 mics from me. GKMC has that feeling, this one doesn't. Its the only thing lacking, because Kendrick outdid himself artistically here.

I was talking to my boy about this album yesterday at all and he wasn't feeling this album at all. He's the guy that I go to find out what music is playing in the clubs because he's one of those guys with his finger on the pulse of "turn up music" so from the time he said this album is too "left" I know for a fact that the general consensus on this album is that the average music listener isn't liking this.

He was genuiely shocked when I said I think this is better than GKMC because he said that musically, this album isn't gonna connect with people unless they already have an affinity for more "traditional soul influenced" music.

I said all that to say that I'm certain this album's impact won't be as big as GKMC amongst the mainstream listeners but it will have longer legs due to only being appreciated by critics and "hardcore" music fans.

A parallel I thought of is that Kendrick's album trajectory is damn identical to D'Angelo's, just without the long waits in between.

No I don't, but that's not what I'm talking about anyway. D'Angelo's Black Messiah had similar themes and its a 5 mic album to me

I'm talking about a connection that can't be defined....an x factor.....the need to hear the album again and again.....a sense of emotion when I listen to it

I don't really relate to any songs on GKMC but I catch that feeling anyway. I just don't catch it on TPAB. It's not the same thing as relating to lyrics....if I had to relate to lyrics to catch that feeling than there would be zero chance that non-vocal album could every be 5 mic album which blatantly isn't true. In Hip Hop for example, DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing" is top 5 all time IMO and there is obviously nothing relate-able about it since its all beats.

My top 2 albums so far this year are Sufjan Stevens' "Carrie & Lowell" and Bjork's "Vulnicura".....both are heartbreaking as fukk but I can't really relate to the subject matter, but both draw a feeling out of me that I can't put into words. Its pictures painted in my ears.
