Jay got his ass whooped and was able to bounce back partly because he kept the hits coming and partly because Nas didn’t go on a jihad against him. After the Summer Jam 02 fiasco and Nas had that rant at Power 105, if Nas would have went on a full fledged “fukk Jay-Z” campaign it would’ve turned out a LOT spookier for Hov. Nas was scorching hot that year and the fact he chilled out and focused on his mother’s health and went the more spiritual/personal route with his music allowed Jay some time to recuperate.
Kendrick went full on “F U C K Drake” mode the last year. Its like he dropped THREE Ethers, shot a video for one of them, organized his own Summer Jam where he was crowned unanimous victor, dropped his Stillmatic, and just kept his foot on Drake’s neck at every opportunity. Kendrick’s every move the past year and a half has been a masterclass in thoroughly decimating and humiliating one’s enemy. The Superbowl halftime performance will probably end up with more first week streams than Drake’s brand new album coming this Friday.

No matter how commercial Jay got he NEVER completely turned his back on the essence of Hip Hop is.
People forget that Drake spent a lot of time publicly shytting on the core values of Hip Hop. He was damn near insufferable between Take Care and Nothing Was The Same. Talking about people who didn’t feel him were just dusty dudes who only wanted to stay in the basement and listen to Only Built For Cuban Linx. He dissed Ludacris and when Luda came back at him and Big Sean they tried acting like Luda was picking on them. All that slick talk about being the best of his generation and whilst utilizing ghostwriters. Being salty over the Control verse and instead of handling it in the booth like a real MC, he went on ESPN bytching and then had the interview pulled.
His humbling was a looooongggg time coming.
