Dope honest convo, and now that we're months from Mr Morale it's a good time to rank things.
To me, TPAB is his best album and magnum opus. I love jazz, and part of the reason I fukked with Kendrick early was because he had so much jazz in his music. Yes it was a "left" turn commercially, but I wouldn't call it a left turn for Kendrick creatively. Classic album.
Second I'd put GKMC. Obvious, undeniable classic at this point. They point out that everyone else from the blog era dropped a sub par debut major label album that wasn't better than their last mixtape. And most of those albums came out before GKMC. Sideline Story and Drake's album had people depressed and fighting. I remember that shyt. Hell I remember being a Cole fan and just deciding to be quiet during a convo at the barbershop where people were clowning Cole for sprinkling sand on Rihanna's legs in that one video. It was open season on my guy lmao. So Kendrick knocking it out the park was amazing.
Third I'd go with DAMN, and at this point I've come around to it being a classic. I'm always gonna be wary about declaring a big album as a classic in rap because you wonder how much of that is due to the dominance (sales, presence, etc) and how much is due to the quality. I was a huge Kanye fan and thought Graduation was...ok. It's obviously a classic album on impact, but personally to me it's like a 3/5 type album. Flip side Vol 2 is full of hits and is a legit great album that you could probably say is a classic at this point. DAMN reminds me of both of those to varying degrees. The hits are actually good, the "real rap" shyt is very good, and the more experimental stuff works too.
Next...Section 80.
And last...Mr. Morale. It's not a "bad" album. I like a lot of songs on there. But quality wise to me there's a clear step down in terms of tracks and quality. There's great shyt on there like Father Time, the intro, and Savior. But most of the commercial tracks on there aren't...that good. Some are just downright whatever, like Purple Hearts. N93 is ok but listen to DNA and then listen to that. On every level it's just...nah. Die Hard is cool but again, compared to the DAMN singles it's just ok again. Silent Hill is cool, nothing more. And all this looks even worse given that Future dropped an album where he knocked his singles/commercial tracks out the park.
Then there's the weird climax about sexual assault, proceeded by Kodak being on multiple tracks. And the five year wait. My hope is that this was a therapeutic project Kendrick had to do for himself and his family. And whatever comes next will be his big "make pgLang the biggest label" album. But then again maybe he thinks Keem can do that. We'll see. Either way I think whatever comes next will come much sooner, and be more in line with what we probably hoped this album would be.
