I never bought the idea that Kendrick had a diss tucked, that sounded more like Drake (smartly) raising expectations for Kendrick. IE he's had a diss that he's crafted for 4 years, it must be amazing...and if it's not...

Drake and Kendrick seemed to be on cordial terms for a few years. Drake went to both of Kendrick's Toronto shows during the Mr Morale tour. Back in 2018 he was giving Kendrick dap in an interview too. Whatever happened must have happened in the last year or two (before Like That) and I don't think it was First Person Shooter lol. That shyt was just an excuse for Kendrick to get his shyt off.

That theory was always stupid to me, it wasn't even that he had multiple tracks over those years, it was he had one magical track just sitting there

I feel like it's believable that Kendrick had a diss ready 4 years ago when Drake was sneak dissing with toosie slide but never put it out.

Drake and Kendrick were never on cordial terms, Drake was doing weird passive aggressive shyt like going to kendrick's shows and showing love in interviews while sneak dissing in songs. Even him reaching out for a feature seemed fake because he dissed Kendrick on that album.

That was Drake trying to extend the olive branch to Kendrick. Word has it Kendrick stopped fukking with him all together after how Drake reacted to the “Control” verse. He wanted to full fledge diss him for years.

Bomani Jones said on his pod a few weeks ago he heard from a certain rapper that they were working on a project back in 2021. They had a Kendrick feature on there and he was dissing Drake. That was around the time he dropped “Family Ties.” So that verse was literally his warning shot before he emptied the clip. However that certain artist got cold feet and scrapped the record.

I heard the same thing from some insiders. Not gonna tell yall the rapper. But let’s just say he is one of the rappers that play both sides.

Would have been wild cause if that would have happened we may not have gotten “Mr. Morale.” The battle probably would have swayed differently….who knows..

I think Kendrick had something for Drake since at least 2017-2018. He was throwing HELLA subliminals at Drake on Damn and we know from the leaked Element verse he had some shyt ready for Big Sean, Jay Electronica, and French Montana. Kendrick was ready for a battle but it never went that way for whatever reason.

I think Kendrick lost all respect for Drake on a personal level when it got out he was dissing him on that ESPN interview and then didn’t have the heart to stand on it and got it pulled from airing. That not only let Kendrick know that Drake was flip floppy, but it let Kendrick know that Drake feared him on some level, and once you know someone fears you, you know that you CAN defeat them. Kendrick knew at that moment that they’d do battle some day and was prepared when the moment happened. Notice that Kendrick has not said ONE nice or complimentary word about Drake since 2017. While Drake called Kendrick a King and was showing up to his concerts, Kendrick wasn’t returning the favor. I’m sure Kendrick might have a song ready then but that doesn’t mean you write ONE diss and just keep it tucked for half a decade. You update it, rewrite it, etc. Just like a WRITER would do, something Drake knows nothing about.
