This album is really really good. A few notes off first listen.
- I'm slightly disappointed, but not because the album isn't outstanding, but because it's not on the level of To Pimp a Butterfly. That album was masterful, so it's hard for Kendrick or any artist to maintain THAT level of outright brilliance. This is still an outstanding effort from him though.
- Musically this album doesn't start off as fun and energetic as TPAB. I could have done without YAH and FEEL no problem.
- DNA is wavy af. That beat switch was . Element and Loyalty are both stand outs. These three tracks saved the first half from being a little on the underwhelming side for me.
- My first impressions on Humble couldn't have been more wrong. I initially didn't like the song but now its one of my favorites on the album.
- I don't like Lust that much and I especially didn't like Love. I haven't read through this thread at all, but I'm curious to see if others feel similarly. Wouldn't say they're horrible records or anything. Just not what I want to hear.
- XXX was amazing. Possibly the best song on the album. For those worried about the U2 feature, Bono did a good job.
- Fear and God are both outstanding tracks. Duckworth is a strong outro, though I question the merit of Top Dawg not killing Kendrick's dad to be some kind of miraculous conception of Kendrick's career. Like was Top really out there in the streets to the point where he was legit in a frame of mind to murder a cashier at a fast food joint
While this album certainly isn't better than TPAB, probably isn't better than GKMC, and IMO Isn't even the best album to come out this past week (that goes to Joey Badass's All Amerikkkan Badass), it's still a great album
