The hilarity of this coming from a DRAKE FAN of all people is RICH.
drake knows how to weave between party songs, introspective songs, and songs for the women.

and yeah, the whole package matters.

For example...I like songs like LUST...but then I'm like what sort of half assed Outkast shyt is this?

Thinking about it, what's hella ironic is that a lot of the same people who talk about Kendrick having a more sophisticated musical foundation than the rest of his peers are the same people who completely ignore some lowkey basic musical shortcomings he has such as his abrasive vocal tonality which rarely ever works in key with the music :skip:

These same people then go on to mock and criticize rappers who can not only maintain consistent vocal tonality in key with the music (Thug) but are also able to convey and control emotion in their delivery/lyrics (Gates) which is literally one of the most coveted skills for any vocalist regardless of genre :skip:

Most of these nikkas never actually laid vocals before so it's understandable, still funny though how the internet rap community created a lotta nikkas who think the technical side of rapping is strictly in the writing. :snoop: I'll give Kendrick credit in that he has some songs where he effectively conveyed the emotion of his lyrics through his delivery but a lot of times it comes off as extremely forced.

I hate ya'll.

This album is really really good. A few notes off first listen.

- I'm slightly disappointed, but not because the album isn't outstanding, but because it's not on the level of To Pimp a Butterfly. That album was masterful, so it's hard for Kendrick or any artist to maintain THAT level of outright brilliance. This is still an outstanding effort from him though.

- Musically this album doesn't start off as fun and energetic as TPAB. I could have done without YAH and FEEL no problem.
As a fellow Lupe Stan I thought for sure you'd fukk with FEEL :ohhh:

Maybe his most impressive lyrical performance on here along with Duckworth. Breh was zoning out :wow:

Kendrick MUST stop overrapping. He's attacking the beat too much. Its like he rap ONLY ONE WAY.

The production keeps saving him.

Let the shyt breathe bro. Get some swagger and pick up some new flows.

Its affecting his clarity cause most times he ain't saying all that much

kinda shows how good drake and Sean are at this shyt...its not easy for him to do anything else except trying to strangle a beat.

takes more than that to have the swagger and confidence to do more on a beat.

i.e. TIP, Thug, etc.

Thats why I rag on his "political raps"...his shyt aint touching what his peers do in that lane, but he gets all the props

these fan theories are fukking stupid :laff:

worst track on the album

Yep...underutilized that Rihanna concept

song doesn't really reach where it needs to.

you need your ass beat

drake knows how to weave between party songs, introspective songs, and songs for the women.

and yeah, the whole package matters.

For example...I like songs like LUST...but then I'm like what sort of half assed Outkast shyt is this?

Someone up thread talked about Kendrick being off key. I don't know shyt about music like that and I like the vast majority of the tracks theoretically even tho I wanted an album of harder hitting angry stuff that hip hop has been lacking. But I think the off key thing might be why so many songs just sound a little.... off? It's worth some more spins regardless.

after a quick listen last night and a couple so far this early in morning.

it's a GOOD album.
he's a made nice album with a coupe of punches dead in the arm thrown in.

DNA
Yah
Feel
Loyalty
Love
XXX
Fear
Duckworth

thats my joints from the album right there.

DNA is crazy, Yah is a head nodder but has a lovely feel to it. Feel..tell me this wouldn't have been a fire collab w/ Drake. Loyalty..Rihanna sounds delightful. Love is going to massive for Kendrick. he's channelling Young Thug on this. XXX, i dreaded this but he pulled it off. that shyt straddles the corny line but Kendrick's soul makes it hip-hop, if a white rapper like Eminem got this it would have been a soulless corny abomanation. 9th Wonder gave me my biggest surprise on this..never thought he had a beat i would like as much as this in 2017. great story too and a fantastic way to finish the album.

the other songs...Element is decent without being memorable, Humble still doesn't do it for me
Pride and Lust should have been great but he just doesn't do it on them for me and God i don't know if i can see growing on me.

love that what will be one of he biggest album of the year got Kid Capri all over it.

he struck a nice balance on here but honestly, the more as time goes on the less i feel him as a rapper.
not to say he doesn't hit out the park a couple of times...DNA, 2nd half of Feel, Fear, Duckworth he shows out.

what i will say though is that way too times the “best rapper of his generation” the part were he's actually spitting can end up being the worst part of the song (happened on TPAB) or i am sitting thinking if this artist had this beat they could make it better. for instance…if Andre had Lust or if Cudi was humming (pause) all over God.

all in all after two heavy listens in GKMC and TPAB he's made a real palatable album that average fan will eat up.
