What I mean is sometimes a franchise just has that one film that for whatever reason spikes in popularity but it’s not a baseline it’s an outlier and not indicative of what a franchise will typically do so it shouldn’t be held against the rest of the films.Dawn may not have done a billion but it did way more than the rest of its respective franchise. Something like MCU that keeps going up is an exception not the rule.
Apes was capable of being bigger but I do think Reeves dropped the ball on part 3. The interest definitely had waned I think.

I think he made a great film but damn was it pretty dark and depressing and I think they made a mistake releasing it during summer. It was too heavy for the current climate to have runaway success

I don’t think he dropped the ball. It was a truly dark movie and the US wasn’t in the mood for that at the time. It’s like the thing in 82. Carpenter makes one of the greatest horror flicks of all time but no one sees it because no one is in the mood for what he was doing at the time. History is like that

This movie tracking way below the last one. They showed a tv spot the other day and pretty much showed the entire scene, that shyt is a turn off. I hate when they do that shyt. My 6yr old wants to see it so I might take her this weekend of I can get a chance.

first half ass remake was mediocre, everyone knew this was gonna be more of the same, i'll catch it when it hits HBO

I wouldn't compare it to the Thing since war will never be considered one of the all time greats. It was dark but Reeves story line was weak.

I’m not comparing to the thing in the sense of quality. Just the example of audiences not being down for something regardless of its quality. 2017 was a dark year and people didn’t want to go to a theater to see more dark shyt.

Also I thought the story was far from weak :manny:

Perfect end to that story and the only way it could’ve ended.

The Thing more suffered from when it was released that year rather than the climate of that period. A full on horror movie in the summer was risky even if a movie like Alien did well some years before.

And as far as War is concerned, I think the ending was fine, the lead up was bad after such a great first half as the movie played out like an adventure film. Then it went prison escape route with an underdeveloped Woody. I like the movie but the overall story was very cliche and in some spots generic. That's me tho. :manny:

Fair enough on the last part

And yeah it suffered for a variety of reasons but mostly it was because ET was killing it and no one wanted to see that movie following ET, which is bright and happy and joyous even tho there are sad moments in it. Art is all about timing. It was written drops in 96 and goes platinum and makes Nas a star but the album doesn’t really get any love from hardcore fans. Few years later they were more accepting of it and saw it for what it is. Wizard of Oz flopped when it came out too but over time it gained esteem
