We had a community forum last night about Juneteenth where we invited members of the black neighborhoods (where I live there is no black middle class...everyone is right at the poverty line or below) to discuss Juneteenth, the idea of banishment, and reparations since the Coates piece. We had about 25 people show up and had a lively discussion about why we should celebrate Juneteenth and how it should be recognized as a national holiday; I've celebrated Juneteenth for the past 8 years because it was our true emancipation day and the first day that we as blacks took ownership of our own freedom. Today, I am throwing a barbeque and basketball tournament for the community to come out and show real support for a day that MUST be in every community...fukk a 4th of July; Juneteenth is the day of our independence and the first step away from oppression; but we have a long way to go...

Brown Chapel AME Church, one of the city's oldest African-American churches, will mark Texas' historic Juneteenth emancipation day 4 p.m. Saturday with a dinner on the church's Sixth Ward grounds.
Juneteenth, observed on June 19, marks the anniversary of U.S. Maj. Gordon Granger's 1865 Galveston announcement that slaves had been freed. The announcement was made approximately 2 1/2 years after President Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation.
Brown Chapel, 3208 Washington Ave., was formed by a group of 10 freed slaves in 1881, and was named after its first minister, the Rev. Louis Brown.
The current pastor, the Rev. Salatheia Honors, said Saturday's menu will feature fish, shrimp, hush puppies and "all the fixin's." Tickets are $20, and those planning to attend should RSVP by telephoning 713-862-8718.
Profits from the event, hosted by the church's Mary Brown Women's Missionary Society, will be devoted to community projects , Honors said
