Peter Gunz and Lord Tariq sampled a Steely Dan song and bascially made no money off the biggest (only) hit of their career.
They had to give up all that publishing.
Peter Gunz was on Love and HipHop and somebody asked him what about his legacy and he responded with something like:
"I had one hit song...I drive a 1999 Mistubishi Montero..... what legacy?"

:pachaha:
:bryan::deadmanny: the label didn't fight it? or at least try to get some publishing rights? BC that means they can't make money either. Steely Dan racist anyway so that doesn't surprise me

Greediness for wanting compensation from someone using, LIFTING your melody? The audacity, too bad all those cancer patients and kids with cleft palates won’t get the proceeds Juice was gonna give them from this cut. Oh wait, :rudy:

And lol@ Sting fading into obscurity. Mr. Producer if you got 150 beats sampling people’s songs-I mean “paying homage”- maybe you need to go back to the drawing board and learn how to be original, perhaps? :dwillhuh:

When this song starts the first few times I heard it before my display showed Juice Wrld I was like why are the HH stations playing Sting?:leostare:

I am original!

I sell MY ORIGINAL beats everyday
You can't tell me shyt tbh.:youngsabo:

I give music away for free dummy.
I believe in sharing musical theories
Is that a crime?

I do feel people should be compensated for their ideas, But to take 100% of a record is greedy af.

Like I said fukk em make your own shyt.

Not that they shouldn't get paid

but 85% is fukking steep, juice made the song what it was imo
but artists will always get fukked either by labels or by each other

Well producers need to be original and make their own beat

As a producer, you're shytting on another producer/songwriter (Sting) and assuming that a Sting song will "fade into obscurity". From one producer to another, please do your homework and get familiar with legendary artists and the groups that they originated from (The Police, fyi). Furthermore, stop sampling HITS and start digging for actual obscure records to sample from if you wanna go that route. Do the knowledge on sampling, research Biz Markie , Vanilla Ice, etc and why most of De La Soul's catalog is not online.

:camby:I Stopped sampling 8 yrs ago it's not worth the hassle.

Breh I got whole soundkits And drumkits. That I created from scratch circulating the net. :sas2:

My first reaction the first time I heard this muhfukka whining like a bytch over what I considered to be the beat to Nas' The Message was one of utter disgust... So I can only imagine what Sting who made the original thought lol

But yeah, don't the producer and the songwriter get equal points on songs? To me Sting's cut should come from the producer's haul
Nah that would create mixed inconsistent results cause most producers cuts are insignificant and only represent a portion of the song. You got to obtain performance, mechanical, and reproduction rights for a sample. No way around it, artist will have to pay. And original copyright owners aren't good with a chump change from a producers cut. Labels have tried this angle and failed considerably

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
Breh, if you made a song and someone sampled it without clearing it and that sampled song went on to make millions....you're telling me you wouldn't want your cut? :usure:
Of course. I didnt ever say Sting was wrong. I'm talkin bout the cats who jerked Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. I never said anything about the original artist sampled not deserving any money.

I think it was Ken Lewis that said once that you could sample other artists' freely, put it on mixtapes, etc. - by rule that's cool, it's art.

But once that song blows up or makes significant money, you can expect artists' lawyers to get involved - whether they notify the artists who were sampled or not, somebody will collect.

Those are the rules all musicians have to go by - nobody is getting exceptions.

Bottom line - get your samples cleared:
If that shyt really sounds great coming out of the studio, put that paperwork in because it may blow up and it'll be too late to do anything about it.

Would you even know what a soundkit or drumkit was if it weren't for someone doing the same thing before you? You'll never be great with that attitude. You can pay homage AND build your own legacy. You sound ignorant. Smarten up "Air Max 95".

This is why it's important to know Hip-Hop history. When it comes to sample lawsuits, Biz Markie & De La did that so hopefully these soundcloud rappers won't have to go through that.
Before you upload that mixtape, #DoYourGoogles.
