I said in another thread that Joey should be for New York what Kendrick is to LA - I’m not from NY though so I don’t know the politics that comes with that. In terms of rapping ability, he’s pound for pound the best rapper in NY but he seems to want be in the artsy lane being a creative, acting and being into fashion.

When he dropped this in 2012 as a 16 year old I thought he was going straight to the top but I don’t know if he’s hungry enough to want to claim best in NY.



NY is competitive so that would be a position he would had have to fight for consistently whereas in LA, every rapper pretty much submits to the position that Kendrick is the best. A lot of that I think is to do with the team Kendrick had around him at TDE though - even the rappers on the label basically submit to that same position. Joey doesn’t have the luxury of a TDE for him to really make that push on the East. Guess he’s enjoying his life though which is probably enough for him.

I think the problem is when he got on he was still too young and finding himself as an artist, as at that point he was never anything more than a solid imitation of the 90s GOATs. By the time he really started hitting his stride he started taking acting more seriously.

In fact, he's actually said that acting was always his real goal, he just got bored with school and decided to rap since that would be a way more fun way to get his foot in the door of Hollywood.

He should be but he doesn’t have the discography to be able to make that claim. Kendrick’s discography is one of the best in rap and if you exclude GNX, it’s almost flawless.

i say that as someone who thinks 1999 is a top 10 project since it dropped and probably the best project from the east coast in maybe 2 decades

but joey nowhere near the writer kendrick is.
