I'll retouch on something I said earlier. They are a little bland here and there, but for some reason they suit him. I think in general it's hard to add a lot of extra instrumentation and stuff like that to regular beats without it sounding kinda weird. Like Kanye on Late Registration having Jon Brion add a lot of extra instruments and stuff made it work. But usually it sounds kinds forced and bland like you said. It's like a knockoff "epic movie vibe" or something.
I do think Budden needs that type of extra production to his music though, because he doesn't have the best hooks and his verses are usually way more than 16 bars. Some of these songs are running 7-8 minutes and you can't do that without changing things up. I think this is a step in the right direction though. His production is getting a better, it's just not all the way there yet.
