The writing has been on the wall, I could tell many years ago that she didn't like the rap game. This game doesn't appreciate it's artists, either your hot or your not, no in between. I'm sure if she had it to do all over again she would never have written a rap.

If you don't appreciate other types of art, then you probably won't get what I'm saying.
Nonsense
There's plenty of artists who aren't "hot" but have built fan bases and eat of records sold and shows nicely

Curren$y a good example

I can't even name 15 indie rappers. All the indie rappers I'm aware of are happy with that situation though.
I wasn't talking indie though. I was talking artists who aren't "hot" but still successful

Jean Grae has had a few problems.

1. Her source of income should not just have been in rap.
Acting, business ventures in and out of entertainment like Queen Latifah.

2. she could've done more to use her sex appeal. Nicki Minaj, Foxy even Remy Ma have done so and so has Lauren Hill to a certain extent.
Even male rappers have to use it or use the image of wealth. I think she had a nice body that she hides to this day. But she could stand to get her body to where it needs to be and sex sells period. Also I think she could appeal to men and women of different cultures also because of her look.

4.Also like it or not, femcees have to be aligned with a male and/or male group. Lil Kim (BIG), Foxy (Nas the Firm, Jay Z), Lauren Hill ( Wycleff and Fugees) Queen Latifah (Treach Naughty By Nature cosign) Da Brat (JD,),Missy(Timbaland)

4. She needs to be have singing be a strong part of her game when it is needed like (Hill, Minaj, Queen )

:duck:How would she need a Treach co-sign when she was one of the original members of the Flavor Unit and Naughty By Nature was managed by the unit?

I agree that it's much more difficult to go indie than most people think it is, because the internet actually causes a lot more problems than it solves.

That said, dudes like Run the Jewels, Atmosphere, and Cunninlynguists are all eating nicely. The thing is though, they all have mostly white fanbases, which is a lane some artists would rather not go for.

They both had fan bases prior to the internet frenzy, I admit it's helped but; they have been putting in work way before the web was taken serious, as a viable way to promote a product.

That's true, I think it was honestly easier for indie artists before the internet - people talk about how you can use social media to blow up, but that's just increased the amount of competition from wack artists who write a 16 or pick up a guitar or whatever and think they'll be famous. Plus it decreased the amount of sales, obviously.

When it comes to RTJ though, a lot of their fans who I've talked to (read: hipsters) didn't even know who El-P and Killer Mike were until Pitchfork started writing about them. Both of them having established underground fanbases definitely helped them get their foot in the door when it came to getting media attention (and that probably lead to the hipster fans), but maybe a new artist or group could come up and do something similar, without having 15-20 years prior experience in the game.
