A journalist wrote a great book about Thiel a couple years ago that was sort of a subtle warning:

In the book, the author got in contact with a Black classmate of Thiel's at Stanford and she said that they got into a heated debate about the South African apartheid, which he made excuses for. And he, similar to Elon Musk, whom he sort of has beef with, spent part of his childhood raised in South Africa.
