Jay was paying Beans' mortgage and bills while he was going through his legal issues. He was also working with the DA to lessen the charges during the trial and writing in as a "character witness" for Beans. That's what helped him get a shorter sentence. Both Dame and Jay helped with his legal fees because Beans had burned through all of his money by the time trial came around. They were all showing up for him at court during that time. And them having to go through all of that for him, was hurting them on the backend for business.
SP's clothing line was something that Dame brokered for Beans. Dame sent him over to the same people that were doing Rocawear. Dame speaks about that all the time. Jay didn't have anything to do with that deal. Those were Dame's people. But Beans will tell you, he's the one that fukked up his own deals and money. Dame and Jay never took anything from him. If anything, he owes them bread because they took care of a lot of his bills when he couldn't do it for himself.
I don’t know about whether or not he was marketable. That's kinda subjective. Just music and talent-wise, he had it. He was making millions of dollars as an artist. Even if the label was going under, he had enough talent and pull to at least head to another label and keep building on his legacy. Scarface always said Beans was one of the beat in the game. Everyone loved dude. So he definitely could've gone on to keep making classics. He always says that he just didn't know how to do it back then. And that's the sad part. He lost out on a lot of blessings.
Where you hear that? From all accounts, none of that happened. The only thing they said Jay did was show up at court. Jay also did not vouch for him as a character witness, which is why he was sentenced in the first place...and the last straw the shattered their relationship. Dame paid the legal fees, and they've all said they weren't even in contact with Jay during those times, and the only time they saw him was at the trial. Whether or not Jay paid the fees, and that came out later, I never heard anything about that. Then again, 9/10 times, they would've used label money.
Peedi, O/Sparks and Young Guns all had cases during this time, O & Sparks multiple, and more serious. O said that Dame was the one setting him up in apts and paying his legal fees.
The State Prop clothing only had Beans as the face, not an owner, or someone that would receive royalties from merch. Beans was x'd out of that deal completely, but it looked like he was the boss. This was another issue Chain Gang had with the setup. Beans was marketed as a boss, but had no boss power and wasn't gettin boss checks. He was getting a small check, like they all were, and the crazy thing is that they still ended up having to pay for it when used for videos/shoots. I don't know if you follow Philly hip-hop, but Peedi, O, Sparks, Beans, Neef have all spoken on this...since like '04 on. Chris always shrugs it off when asked, and Free is quiet. Both Free and Beans had deals ready to go, but Jay wouldn't sign-off on the deals.
Music wise, he was still never gonna be a superstar because he couldn't create crossover White-America music. His best album by far is The B Coming, and that didn't even go gold. He made music for the streets and hood chicks, which was not enough to garner superstar appeal. He also was never gonna get many endorsements. Now did he blow through the money, of course he did. But he was never getting great money like that to begin with.
