This here.
Jay was calling in a lot of favors for Beans, while Beans was going through his little struggles. Mack had it. Super talented and had the kind of situation where the only way he'd lose, would be if he dropped the ball himself. Thing is, he couldn't leave the drugs and streets alone. They all had their legal issues at one time or another, but Beans overdid it to the point where he started becoming bad for business. They tried to help him through all of this legal trouble, both financially and otherwise, and he would go right back to putting himself in those same situations. Dude single-handedly killed his own career. Mad self-destructive.
And he says it all the time. He never got shorted or snaked by anyone. Everything he had, he threw away himself. It's sad because dude was supposed to be up there with the greats.
That was moreso Dame, which is the only real reason he went with Dame after he got out. And he talked about how they didn't get anything from State Property merch, and Dame was getting all of that money. Jay also blocked his (and Free's G-Unit deal).
As for it being bad for business, I don't know. He wasn't a marketable guy outside of the streets, for true commercial appeal. As we've seen time and time again, street fanfare enhances your marketability for rap....back then, especially. But he was never going to be a household name, like 50 or X. The problem I see is that no matter what, he was always going to be under Jay, so his light would diminish unless he got from under there. However, once that happens, he would have to put the work in himself, which I don't think he would've ever been good at. He would need a strong team behind him. His ceiling would still be Styles P, which is pretty much where he is now.
