I want to support Shingo but boy do I have a negative interest in NJ right now and really this whole year and most of last year, too. Hope Gedo pulls some real rabbits out of the hat for the G1 this year.

Gedo could start by making title matches no longer than 25 minutes unless it's a huge feud finally ending. A huge reason why the G-1 is so dope is because of the 30 minute time limit and there's literally no reason to make all these IWGP title bouts so bloated just because it's a title match.

It's incredible how he copied the worst part about 00's NOAH :dead:

Especially main event title matches. Not everything needs to be 35+, especially since most of the wrestlers really don't have over 30 minutes of ideas laid out. You'll get your occasional Tanahashi or Okada that can pull if off for their own reasons, but I really don't need to watch 40 minutes of say, an Ibushi-Naito murder/suicide pact. They can easily damn near off themselves in 20.

Obviously, there are exceptions, for example fresh matchups where they're trying to get across the point that whoever it is that's stepping up to the current ace is surprisingly able to push them, or big blowoff matches, but it really doesn't need to be expected that whatever the main event is is an automatic hour of your day.

I don't mind 35 or 40 minute title matches in fact I expect that from NJPW. Gives it more of an epic feel and those matches go by fast. Of course I don't watch AEW or WWE so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

If everything thing is a 35-40min epic then nothing is a 35-40min epic though.

There's no reason to buy a near-fall at the 18min mark if you know there's some unspoken rule that we're only at the halfway mark.

I'd kill for a throwback try to bomb somebody out world title sprint.

Well since Ospreay forfeited the title I haven't watched NJPW but look at this year Ibushi-Naito about 35min, Ibushi-JayWhite 50+min, then Ibushi-SANADA was like 28min, Ibushi-Desperado was like 20min, Ibushi-Ospreay was 30min, Ospreay-Takagi was 45min.

Those are not too long and for who are in the matches is about right.

I actually wanted more from Ibushi-Ospreay but the decisiveness of the finish was the beginning of a story which I don't think got to play out like they wanted because of the stoppage after the COVID breakout and the Ospreay injury.

I heavily disagree but I see were you are coming from. My (and others) issue with them is that we feel the exact opposite as you. Those matches don't fly by, they feel like a chore to watch for half or even 3/4 of their duration. Most of the action before the final sequence (that are always at the very least, really fun to watch) doesn't grab me nor do I find whatever they do compelling to watch. Mostly because I know it will have very little meaning by the end of the match but even if that wasn't the case, they don't do stuff that interest me that much. There are exceptions, of course, but the amount of matches I didn't think could've been 10 to 20 minutes shorter I can count on 1 hand in the last 4 or 5 years.

When a big match lasts 20 to 25 minutes (or less), is harder to find those stretches and even if they are there, they are much shorter so I'm less bothered by them and in a great match I don't even care because it's such a blimp in the overall match.

But I can see why if you love everything (or mostly everything) they do in a ring, you'd welcome matches going as long as they can and feel like big epics every time. I'm curious, since when have you been watching New Japan and which would you rank n°1 to n°3 in terms of main events: Okada's run (2013-2018), Naito/Ibushi/more (2018-today) and Tanahashi's run (2007-2013)

Agree wholeheartedly. I find myself skipping ahead after the 5 minute mark to when the match starts to pick up after the obligatory limb work. There's very little drama or compelling reason to tune in for every minute of these long marathon matches for the most part IMO. I feel bad doing it, but i can't dedicate 2 hrs to just watch 2 NJPW matches

To piggyback off of this, a lot of the issue is that there's a LOT of being asked to watch a 30 minute plus match of a matchup you've seen multiple times, for no real reason other than it's a main event. While the match might be incredible, it's personally hard to get excited about a 45 minute Ospreay/Shingo match when I know for a fact that I've seen them put together an amazing match in 10-20 minutes less time.

I think the only real exception for is Okada, depending on who he's wrestling. It's formulaic as shyt, but his format of wrestling a segment in the opponent's style, a segment in his style, and then the callback/reversal/finish sprint is cool when he's in there with someone interesting, and at least lays out a supposed reason why they would need 35 minutes to wrap it up.

Show was good but man the atmosphere was rough with a near empty Tokyo Dome.

Shingo on a hell of a run. EVIL though :unimpressed: Think I'll skip that one. Not even Shingo is making a 30+ minute match with constant ref bumps and interverence watchable.
