didnt one of them die in the ring from a brainbuster?

:ohhh:so Japan fell off around the same time wwe did:patrice:.. I assume they have recovered much quicker

I think you're thinking of Hashimoto, who died of a brain aneurysm. The brainbuster was his finisher too

Misawa died from a backdrop suplex (basically a high angle belly to back suplex).

There's no video of it, but there is a picture right before the landing.

What's crazy is that he took WAY worse bumps over his career. In fact, the suplex that killed him was rated a 7 out of 10 in the danger scale. Source is http://www.f4wonline.com/component/content/article/9617 It was implied that his spine and neck just got weaker and weaker over the years and eventually just gave out. Sort of like how football players can get slammed over and over without a serious injury, and then they they slip discs in their back and are never the same when they reach down to tie their shoes one day. He was also more out of shape when he died. I don't know if that contributed, but he had a gut and his shoulders/neck area didn't look as strong as in the past.

Here are some insane head drops that Misawa took over the years. It's just unbelievable the fukking balls on this guy to take so many unprotected head drops. Look up Burning Hammer or Kawada Driver / Ganso Bomb on youtube if you want to see some of the more insane bumps that he took.

here's a pic of Misawa mid-landing from the 2nd time he took a burning hammer, a move that Kenta Kobashi only did a handful of times ever. It's a reverse death valley driver/torture rack brainbuster, and Misawa took it unprotected, right on top of his head, twice. After this one he was fukked up for a long time afterwards. I think they said he could barely make it to the locker room.

Gun to my head, top 5 Japanese guys in no order

Jumbo Tsuruta
Gen'ichiro Tenryu
Mitsuharu Misawa
Toshiaki Kawada
Yoshiaki Fujiwara....or Tatsumi Fujinami or Shinya Hashimoto, or Kenta Kobashi..can't decide breh :sadcam:

If you include foreigners you have to check everything involving Terry Funk and Stan Hansen.

You think Kawada and Misawa are significantly above Kenta Kobashi? Just curious. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. To me on his best day, I think I almost preferred Kenta Kobashi over Misawa or Kawada. Mostly because of his later career. he came back to NOAH and had some classic matches near the end, where I think Misawa may have had the better career earlier, but I never thought Misawa had the classic matches in NOAH that Kobashi had. Kawada is probably just on me, but I never followed his freelance worl as much after his time in AJPW.

Oh yeah. I'd take Misawa and Kawada over Kobashi any day of the week. Although I did enjoy and found his work to be great in NOAH, I never found the "head-drop-y/spam finishers/nearfalls" tendency King's Road style began having in the late 90's to be better than what they were doing before. And when it came to the NOAH years shyt just got "worse".

This is no doubt nit picking, but when choosing between the absolute best ever you can't help being nitpicky to choose one over the other. To me, once Kobashi took over and became the Ace the matches went from god-like to "just" amazing/great...damn that sounds silly :heh:

Not saying Misawa or Kawada weren't guilty of taking the style to what it became but Misawa was too broken down to keep pushing the pace the Kobashi kept doing, and Kawada was just smarter than both of them so he didn't kill himself once he got to a certain age.

I loved "third wheel" Kobashi in the early-mid 90's, Ace Kobashi just wasn't that great to me. I prefer pissed off Kawada and stoic Misawa over "rah rah fighting spirit Kobashi". Hell, even if he didn't have a catalog of matches as impressive as Kobashi, I'd still take Hashimoto over him too. I just enjoy him more.

For a brief time i liked Kawada over Kobashi too but it was more because he would continually get injured after winning the Triple Crown (still the GOAT looking world titles in history, mind you). But as much as i felt sorry for Hard Luck Kawada, it was Kobashi's fighting spirit that made me as big a fan of puroresu as i am today.

I definitely see your point on where the King's Road style went though.

@Jmare007 @Beautiful Bobby Eatin both good posts.

I'm guessing ya'll have Jun Akiyama a rung lower than the rest of Misawa, Kawada, Kobashi, Taue, etc?
To me, i have Akiyama where i currently hold Okada, Ishii, Ibushi, Laughter 7 and Marufuji. I love to watch them and always will but theyre not on my personal godlike tier like Kobashi, Mutoh, Hashimoto, Hayabusa, Onita, Chono, Misawa etc.

I'd have Akiyama at least level with Kobashi at this stage, dude is still pulling out amazing preformances. Shame he's so under the radar though, that AJPW collapse :to: He'd be above Muoto, Chono, Sasaki etc. Around Hashimoto but I'd give the edge to Hash because of the stronger ace run and the spectacular Dome deals. I'm an Akiyama stan :manny:

Yeah, Akiyama is a couple of years away from elite level all time for me if he can keep up the work he's been doing since he jumped to All Japan.

Just when I thought he was going to fade into "what could've been" level he found his grumpy veteran side only few guys in puro have been able to master. 2-3 more years of piff and it's gonna be hard as fukk not to put him right up there with the gawds.
