Like I said, Dave tends to have horrible sources - or is incredible naive/lazy with kayfabe shyt - when it comes to puroresu. BUT, he was right with the last two big injuries/disappearences in New Japan (Shibata and Kitamura), so

I've been very, very slowly making my way through the 70s in the AJPW Archive. 1978 seems to be a struggle year. Most of their big name guys seemed to age 10 years in 1 (Baba, Don Leo Jonathon, Abby in particularly had huge drop offs this year), they're bringing in old and busted Tor Kamata fresh off a WWWF run where he was essentialy just a heel jobber to the stars and in fact seems to be there as a replacement for Abby who took 3 months off to work Georgia. Terry Funk doesn't work any shows until July, Dory doesn't come back in until December for the tag league. Random Italian guys get brought in to work Baba and Destroyer a bunch. They aren't good. On the upside, Ted DiBiase and Ric Flair start popping in from time to time, Ted was in the CC that year and had a pretty good showing, Flair has a fun tag and singles match against Jumbo.
