AJ Styles vs. Okada (IWGP World Heavyweight Champion)
To Open
We open with an interview session with Okada, and he rips AJ Styles. Talking about how AJ wasn't that great while he was in America...I was like, 'oh, we talking spit again?'
Okada is always that dude to talk down his opponents: "When I was in the States I thought AJ Styles was done."
DAMN!
Styles
I didn't know that AJ Styles was Bullet Club's replacement for Prince Devitt! This is his first match as a member of NJPW.
I'm shocked that he gets a title match.
Loved AJ's Suplex into the corner. It's always fun to see non generic moves that are grounded in pro-wrestling holds.
Peep the kneedrop and the Suplex exchange. Very fluid.
Also, I love how violent he attacks legs. It's like, "I'm a heel, now! This is fun." Peep the elbows & kicks to Okada's shin.
Oddly enough, Styles has slowed down the same way Taker did when he became a thug. He has reminiscent babyface bursts, but in full heel mode Styles prefers to punch attack body parts.
Btw, the Calf-Killer has really grown on me. It is the kind of 21st century submission hold that doesn't look like a resthold.
Okada
I love the early psychology. Loved the way Okada used the headlock to dictate movement and to differentiate our grapplers' personalities.
Okada sold the hell out of Styles' move set. Peep his "Ric Flair-kickout" where everyone knew that it was over. Props.
Also, when he was on the attack he was quick and nimble.
Hero/villain status in New Japan seems to be almost fluid. Fans cheer talent and athleticism.
Curiously, Okada acts like a heel but he's clearly the face in this match.
Close: fans popped for the ending. I didn't realize that it was so controversial. WoW.
