I tried telling folks this after that Coachella performance. Janet at her PRIME was on a whole other level. And y’all right..unlike Beyonce..Janet legit had competition in the 90’s with Madonna, Mariah, Whitney, Brandy, etc. And she was STILL at the top...

In the 90’s...at one point..Mike and Janet were RUNNING shyt..

Right. The only person Bey has been consistently competing with is probably Rihanna. And Bey is barely winning that race as is. Lol

I love both Beyoncé and Janet. Bey is my favorite performer of all time, but Janet is a beast too. I have no problem appreciating both.:yeshrug:

That performance was also VERY VERY Janet like. I never got the Madonna comparisons at all. Her stage performances and showmanship were Janet all the way through, up and down.

facts

50% Janet + 50% Madonna = Britney Spears

Towards the beggining of the end of her legendary chart run when she started hooking up with the Neptunes Production consistently(Boys, Slave 4 U) she was really 75% Janet + 25% Madonna.

Nah, Beyonce is levels above Rihanna. The only thing Rihanna has over Beyonce is singles. Beyonce was breaking and setting records with surprise releases and forcing the industry to confirm. Rihanna struggled at the beginning to pull off a surprise album. Rihanna could never shut down Coachella. MTV gave Rihanna a Vanguard Award and Rihanna performed, but was overshadowed by Beyonce who was allowed to perform nearly a medley of her entire album.

The only thing Bey has over Rihanna is touring numbers. She’s a more successful touring artist. Rihanna was leading Bey in record sales before streaming became a thing. So I’m not sure where they stand today.

Janet deserves everything. She's the Blueprint period for a lot of these girls as far as full package of shows/dancing/singing/music videos etc. Beyonce deserve to be mentioned with the Greats but she doesn't have a better catalog than Janet. Most people putting Beyonce over Janet or even Michael were not alive in the 80's or were too young during Janet or Michael's prime to see the impact they had on Black Music. "Control" and "Rhythm Nation" alone changed the game for Black Women in music. Not to mention the competition she had from Legendary artist like Whitney, Mariah, Madonna and getting out of her own Brothers Michael and Jackson 5 shadow. No Artist in history will EVER have 18 CONSECUTIVE TOP 10 HITS IN A ROW. Even Michael never had that many straight hits. Janet Jackson actually has had a #1 Singles in Pop, R&B, Rap, Dance and Rock & Roll. She's one of the most versatile artist ever honestly. You don't have to try and bring Michael and Janet down to boost up Beyonce. She is her own artist and building her own legacy just fine. The reality is people are mentioning Michael and Janet because they are the Standard. Janet's music videos were revolutionary just like Michael's at the time which is why she's so influential. So though there are a few categories that would say, Yeah sure Beyonce may do this better than Janet. Overall with everything, Janet is better and has had a more Historic Career.

Beyonce's albums are higher sellers than Rihanna's. Rihanna didn't lead Beyonce in album sales before streaming. Pre-streaming, Rihanna's biggest selling album was Good Girl Gone Bad, which sold 2 million+ stateside and 9 million worldwide. Rated R did like 1.1 million stateside and 3 million worldwide. Loud did 1.8 million+ stateside and 8 million worldwide. Talk That Talk did 1.1 million+ stateside and 5.5 million worldwide. Unapologetic did 1.2 million stateside and 4 million worldwide. Anti did 603K stateside and 1.1 million worldwide.

For Beyonce, I am not counting anuthing she did before Rihanna debuted. B Day sold 3 million+ stateside and 8 million+ worldwide as did I Am Sasha Fierce. Beyonce's sales dipped with 4. Then Beyonce sold 2.5 million+ stateside and 5 million+ worldwide. Her latest album did 1.5 million stateside and 2.5 million worldwide.

Was she bigger than Beyoncé in her prime? Yes.

And she may not have sold as many records as Michael BUT she charted more hit songs.
I love Janet but she was HUGE never as big as Bey or Whitney even.
Janet out charted MJ in the US but that’s it. She was never a bigger star nor were her songs more popular.

Nope.

Record sales (albums+singles) have Rihanna at over 230 Million internationally. I can’t find a proper figure for Bey that doesn’t have her sales with DC included but I’m confident it’s nowhere close to Rihanna’s international figure.

Rihanna's sales figures includes singles, which she clearly leads Beyonce in. I am talking about albums alone. Rihanna has several singles that have gone diamond and every album has at least 3-5 singles.

Beyonce and Rihanna aren't even in the same league. Beyonce really doesn't have competition and the only artists she's really competing with at this point are herself, Adele, and Taylor Swift.

Record sales are a combination of both, tho. That’s how the best selling artists have their figures calculated.

Bey is more of a touring artist. But she’s not outselling Rihanna, nor is she charting the hits that Rihanna is.

I never said record sales (because clearly it includes singles which I noted was the only category Rihanna leads Beyonce in).

Beyonce's albums, shows (that recent Coachella perorformance alone broke records), and tours are bigger than Rihanna's, which only leaves singles.

Not quite. Album wise since IASF/GGGB Bey and Rih have been neck and neck. Considering Bey dropped on 03, she should have left Rih in the dust.
GGGB outsold IASF. Rated R, Loud and TTT outsold 4 individually. Beyonce outsold Unapologetic. Lemonade outsold ANTI. But those margins are small. Rih has outcharted Bey as well.
ETA: These are album sales only.
