seen some stroke survivors have long term side effects like speech impediments and memory issues.

Unfortunately you are correct. Two weeks after the incident they are either keeping him alive artificially (respirator) or they are still determining the extent of his deficits if it is truly a stroke. Possibilities include brain bleed, paralysis, or severe infection (lungs).
