Let's cut to the chase, should Google be forced to hire an inferior applicant just because they are black or Hispanic or female? If they are turning away qualified applicants because of race and hiring others, that's a problem but has it been proven that this is the case?
Yes, work is for working...not coddling people's sensibities.
I don't know man, I'm seeing a lot of nonwhites making moves in the tech world...just because they aren't your flavor of nonwhite doesn't mean that's the tech world's problem.
Not all roles in tech are created equal, breh.
Yes. If you're hiring software engineer, computer scientist, IC designer, etc., skill is skill and hiring decisions should be made to acquire the best talent.
But, there are many other roles at these tech companies that aren't as mission critical.
I've worked in tech, breh. I've seen a bunch of lazy ass cacs and asians who pull down good money for doing very little value-added work.
Our recruiting efforts were pulling those lesser talents from the same schools as our elite talent.
My argument would be that tech companies should continue to recruit at the elite schools for the mission critical talent. Stanford, MIT, Cal Tech, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, etc.
But, for the non-mission critical roles, expand the recruiting to include schools with larger minority representation, including HBCUs.
Inferior versus superior talent really comes down to the role you're trying to fill as a recruiter.
If I'm a recruiter at Nvidia trying to find a chip designer, you're damn right I'm going to Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, etc. to find them.
If I'm looking for a person to do technical sales, does that person really have to come from Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, etc.? I'd argue that the skills needed to succeed in that role can be honed and acquired anywhere.
But, at these top tech companies, they work to fill all roles with the same homogenous talent from the same 5-10 schools.
And those 5-10 schools aren't very diverse. That's the fundamental problem.
Tech isn't 100% customer facing like management consulting. For management consulting, they are justified in sourcing from top MBA programs, solely. Being able to consistently put Harvard, Stanford, MIT, etc. MBAs in front of clients is part of the story they sell to potential clients.
Do you care if the power management block in your iPhone is designed by a Stanford IC designer or one from Arizona State or one from Alabama State? You just want it to work.
