Star Wars has been and always will be about the Skywalker legacy. The man who made it up said it himself. To have a entry into the MAIN storyline that doesn't have a Skywalker (or Solo) as a main protagonist would go against what the ENTIRE story is about. It would be like a Saw movie with no Jigsaw, or a Friday the 13th without JasonNo.
What more is left honestly? Luke defeated the empire, blew it all up, Palpatine is dead. The Jedi Order is back and Luke has his Planet Fitness gym for the young ones.
Unless they focus on Ben what more could you possibly do regarding the Skywalkers? Honest question. I don't have as much canon knowledge as some guys but do tell if you have an answer.
Whereas I can agree on reestablishment of the Skywalker era, I'm not entirely sold on trying to continue Skywalker's Saga.
Differences and emphasis on era and saga.

People saying "I'm done with the Skywalkers" need to brush up on the Expanded Universe. Luke becomes a hard body Jedi Master. The issue is most average fans don't have any idea of the "FUTURE" of Star Wars. We've been stuck in the "PAST" of Star Wars for so long with The Prequels, The Clone Wars and Old Republic and Force Unleashed games that people really lost connection with the E.U. Actually I know about the EU Skywalker line that's why I said I had my fill.
Like I said I really don't what direction J.J. Abrams takes Star Wars I still favor a spin-off with less Skywalker.
I wonder if holding out for a chance to direct Star Wars was the reason why Affleck said he wasn't interested in the Justice League movie. I think Warner should start throwing cash at dude to try and get him in the director's chair.

And I think now we've come to that understanding with what I originally wanted to intend. I don't want them to carry on with Luke anymore personally. I know he has deep canon and such, but the Eps. I-VI totally completed the story for the general public imo.

If you grew up in the 1980's, I don't see how "Super 8" didn't bring you back to Spielberg Era. Sure the Ending was a little cheesy but it was Spielberg all day. This is why I trust Abrams with Star Wars. He is a student of that era that made Steven and George Legends:
