I agree the album has a mixtape feel, although not a “J Cole mixtape” feel. Many of the tracks are lyrical/flow exercises, rapping about rap etc. And that’s fine! How conceptual was The Blueprint for instance? Most of that album was Hov flexing. Coming off two concept albums that weren’t “fun” (but still good albums) this is a welcome shift.
And he nails the songs that have concepts or themes. Close might be his best song.
Production wise you can hear the collaboration. Tae Beast is known for his drum loops and you hear them on his track. Boi1da’s drums ring off a couple times. And you can tell Cole is finally learning from other producers being in the room. His shyt sounds better than it ever has on here.
Maybe all the basketball stuff is him working out for this tour because mannn, that breath control gonna need to be tight to perform these songs lol.
