Frieza easily could have merced Goc00n on sight. He chose to play with him, which backfired. He did not understand how hard in the paint a Tom will go for those outside their own group. CACarot turned into a super saiyan because he saw Krillin die, not his saiyan brother. Not one time did Goku fight hard for the saiyans. Ever.
