A quick glance at history(and current events) forces to me to ask, what so crazy about anticipating govt. fukkery?
My bad, you didnt say that... why do you consider govt. fukkery a "vague" possibility?
I'm not paranoid. The government is comprised of people. Granted, there might be some high-level fukkery but there is a limit to have far that can go and how publicly that can be done. Its in no one's interest to enslave the population of the most powerful nation on earth whose economy is based on consumerism. It would be a net loss for everyone involved that could even possibly orchestrate whatever scenario you have in your head. Added to this is the fact that if this were to happen and the military were backing it (which they wouldn't), people would have no power to stop it.
So, when I do a cost-benefit analysis of this situation, keeping the public armed produces no benefit and thousands die every year. We have the most guns in the world and the most gun violence. The solution to the problem is most definitely not more guns. Not only is this relationship completely intuitive, but anyone who denies is has to have some kind of deep bias. If you're willing to admit that it exists and you're willing to keep in in place because you think it will stave off government fukkery, then at least you're being more honest than the average gun nut. Just remember, when you talk about your rights and all that other force bullshyt you throw around when its convenient, you are supporting a situation where peoples' right to life is being violated daily. I don't know about you, but I'd prefer not to be murdered.
