I think they jumped the gun complaining. If Patty and Gal got some of their backend kicker bread upfront, I don't see why the others wouldn't.

And Nolan fukked himself pushing WB to put Tenet in theaters in the middle of a fukkin pandemic.

No other studio is going to throw 9 figure production budgets at these directors in the middle of pandemic if they get mad.

all them crying about the theatrical experience need to get with the program for the short term. the movies aren't exclusively on HBO Max. Those wanting the corona theater experience can still have it if they want.

I'm trying to recoup the best I can if I'm ATT/WB. Sitting on these movies for years until the theaters come back fully is retarded.

WB has made a come back because of the very directors that are pissed off though. ATT may recoup something now but what do they do when the pandemic is over and those directors and the DGA hold a grudge and decide not to work with WB? It would not be hard for Nolan in particular to find another studio to work with. At the very least you talk to the DGA before you drop this like an atom bomb out the blue. Some of these movies arent even set to release until December of next year, who knows what the climate will look like then, they could have proposed a case by case basis and held off on angering their talent. They should have laid out the Gal deal for everyone else before they made this announcement.

My thing is, I wouldn't give the same deal Patty/Gal got just yet because shyt may change by then. You do it on a case by case basis. And the same movies that WB finances may not fly at Universal or Disney. Esp the latter because of the types of movies they make. The directors would have more of a beef if AT&T just did it straight to HBO Max and said fukk the theaters, but they didn't.

But I do agree they should have told them before then, even if they didn't agree. I'd lay out the financial implications of the current situation and the potential revenue of the move as well. They can disagree and be mad, but there aren't that many studios out there willing to dish out 9 figure production budgets for some of these big movies to be made. Instead of running and crying to the press because your backend kicker is in danger, talk to Stankey and see if you can get a similar deal once your movie is about to be released instead of throwing a public hissy fit crying over theaters and artistic vision and shyt. Theaters can't operate under the old model right now because of Covid, they need to go outside and check reality. Your movie wouldn't have been made without us giving you the money to make it. We trying to get something back as best as we can since we don't know when theater customers will return to pre-covid capacity.

These directors aren't privy to the same financial information that the AT&T/WB finance team has. They crunched their numbers and came up with this deal. And again, it's only for 2021. Stankey reiterated they can make adjustments if need be as well. If shyt is still fukked up as we head into 2022 then they'll continue this model in some capacity. If theaters start to return, that would be good too. Point is theaters need the AT&Ts, Disneys, Universals, Paramounts nowadays, not vice versa. They all have their own streaming service and AT&T and Universal (Comcast) are also ISPs providing internet service.

Warners Adjusting HBO Max Payouts

Warner Bros. Pictures better hope its day-and-date film release plans for HBO Max in 2021 is a success, because it’s going to cost them it would appear.

The announcement of the arrangement caught everyone by surprise, and was quickly met with a backlash from Hollywood and those involved in the films themselves.

One of the big reasons for said backlash is that various cast and crew rely on performance-based bonuses, basically contract stipulations that guarantee a potential share of the film’s profit.

Some forgo a potentially higher wage or salary in exchange for such an arrangement, or have other deals in place where box-office is a factor in how much they’re paid. Any film that debuts day-and-date on streaming will eat into any potential box-office and thus undermine chances of the compensation they were promised.

Now a new report in Bloomberg indicates the studio is working on deals for new payments to filmmakers and their crews on those films, based partly on HBO Max streaming fees.

Warners is reportedly in the process of altering deals with partners to “guarantee payment regardless of box-office sales and to increase the odds of performance-based bonuses.” The recently reported on deal being made for Legendary Entertainment’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” is reportedly at the heart of the negotiations.

Under the deal, HBO Max will pay Warner Bros. a “considerable” fee for the streaming movies for the planned 31-day window each, some of which would go to the production partners, filmmakers, casts and crews.

The deal also halves the amount in box office sales that a film would need to hit before partners begin earning bonuses, and takes into account theater closures, pushing the threshold lower if cinemas are shut.

It’s unclear at this time if all filmmakers and production companies involved will agree to the new deal. Warner. plans to release seventeen movies in 2021 via cinemas and the service, the most notablye being “Dune,” “The Matrix 4,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “The Conjuring 3,” the “Space Jam” sequel and “In the Heights”.

Because this was a move made by people who don't work for the film studio, therefore don't understand the industry and as such had no understanding of the far-stretching consequences and repercussions of what they were doing.
