Game changer

They're saying this is temporary (only for 2021 under the guise of keeping people safe during covid) but I suspect they see the writing on the wall and want to get ahead of the curve so they can set the ground rules (first movers advantage) before other studios follow suit.

I don't know how da fuq they gonna make this work for DUNE. They seem like they have to move the release up because I expect/hope by October (1st was the latest date they gave) most theaters that didn't close down completely will be operative anyway. It's gonna be tougher to get sequels. And HBOmax got no 4K... :mjcry:

Yeah, this is definitely huge news :whoo:

I'm glad I signed up for the 1 year pre-order of HBO Max, so I still get it at a reduced rate. There are a lot of variables in play, so it's hard to say how everything will shake out over the course of the next year or so. WB is definitely losing money in the short term, but they hope it pays off long-term will streaming. Definitely need to get the Roku deal done and expand internationally soon to get those subs up. Also throw the Cinemax library of content on there as well :martin:

I do see their side of thinking that the vaccine and people feeling safe to go out is still a ways off. They do need to do a better job of marketing, hearing that around 28 million people have access to HBO Max at no additional cost, but only around 8 million have activated their account :skip:. Speaks to the fact consumers aren't aware of what they could be watching.

Disney is the only other major studio with a streaming service, and while I can see them putting more family/kids/lower tier fare on Disney+, I don't see them biting the bullet on Marvel films yet.

They’ve already announced international expansion for Max in 2021 for parts of Europe/Latin America. Have to think more countries being announced soon now.
This.. They have to get their international game up now
