They both wanted to protect their families:manny:
Sure it can be boiled down to that, but there were differences sprinkled throughout each tense encounter, and it followed through from the first third of the film to the last third that one family was more trigger happy than the other.

I think where they dropped the ball was in not fleshing out the co-habitation stuff. There seemed to be germs of broader ideas sprinkled in that never ended up going anywhere most specifically the psycho-sexual stuff with Travis and his attraction to the only other non-relation woman in his world and Paul being jealous and feeling displaced by how quickly and easily Will was able to form a paternal bond with Travis while Travis and Paul had a seriously disconnected relationship.
Like, if the film isn't going to be straight horror but instead a psychological thriller then go all in with that shyt.

This is how I felt. It felt like a really bare bones version of a more interesting movie that never happened. For a movie that is slow paced (not in a bad way mind you), it doesn't take its time to develop the relationships and the growing tension between the two families at all. Not that it matters that much because it doesn't change the ending from playing out as predictable as it does either. For a movie that is built as a psychological thriller/horror, the psychology ends up being very basic and underwhelming. It's a delicately crafted film and it manages to create a lot of suspense, but it never develops its story/narrative into an interesting experience.

I agree, an extra 30 min or so would have really ratcheted up the tension and discomfort, to an unbearable level, as it already was uncomfortable to watch in it's more lurid moments. All the pieces were there, but they didn't full expand on them.

What was up with that black kid and the white wife of homeboy? When he woke up in the middle of the night and went to the kitchen and she was sitting there. She wanted that young D and it got weird, on some Get Out type shyt, I thought she was about to take the kid to the sunken place. They never expounded on that and it never turned into anything, was I the only one getting weird sexual vibes during that scene?? Basically this movie's downfall was that it didn't flesh things out and expound on ideas presented.

Sexual tension of an adolescent, who maybe realized on some level, his lack of potential sexual partners, and assumedly a virgin. The sexual relationship between her and Will, which he was listening to, and likely turned on by. And, the dynamics of that in a house where there was an existing power structure, who the real "man of the house was". I agree those screws could have been turned much tighter, though it is already a really uncomfortable watch.

Imagine being a 17 year old virgin, who may never have sex, and have to live with his maniac father for the rest of his life. I think things ended ok in the end for everyone. Sometimes, opting out is better.

I do think there was some strictly physical attraction from her too.

I didn't take it that she was interested in him, but that he was sexually frustrated and was overwhelmed with lust by interacting with her. But yeah, the sexual tension was deliberate, but more as a way to show how this kid is having all kinds of sexual thoughts yet has no outlet to express them. I mean with no girls around, he was probably turned on by listening to his parents have sex.

Just got back from watching it. Not what I hoped it would be but I enjoyed it. Movie felt rushed though, should have added on another 30 minutes or so to flesh things out better. 90 minutes it too short for a non-slasher horror movie.

Watched this yesterday (finally), really enjoyed it...I guess anyone interested saw it by now, but one never knows

So I had only seen parts of the trailer as I had already decided to go watch it, and I was actually surprised there were Black characters...so at the beginning I'm kinda pissed because of course the "Man in the house" is the white man...and the mixed kid is kind of "off" in a way...then there another family who "immigrates" to the house (after having tried to rob them), and they are the ones who bring in the disease (assuming it's the kid)...so I'm wondering, am I reading too much into this or is there some kind of metaphor? Anyways really loved the tension, I'm the type of guy who doesn't need all the answers but yeah would've been cool to have some of them (who opened the door, if "IT" comes at night why doesn't it kill Will or the dog when they're out there...)...and yeah people at the movie theater were pissed too lol
