Ok so I don’t have IT experience and I was thinking about getting an A+ cert but my homie said cyber security is where it’s at and try and get security+ cert instead. I don’t really want to go to school and thinking about using Udemy to learn since the courses are cheap.

Any advice on how to get the cyber security field?
I would say during this down time to learn the inner workings of an OS(Windows and Linux if possible) and networking. No matter what area you go into IT, Networking will help you a ton. I would say those are more beneficial than the Security+. Most will disagree with me but I'm a believer of the A+ in that it will lay down a foundation for you. Not saying you need to get the cert but learning the material that is covered in it is a plus.

Should of took that Network gig my bro was trying to put me on for NYU :francis:

Would been working from home in my draws :francis:

fukking Hospital got me as essential staff :mjcry:
I'm so glad I didn't pull the trigger on any companies that are forcing their people to still come into work.

But despite working from home my workload hasn't gone down. And the worst part is we had a guy quit two weeks ago. And we probably won't replace him for months. So all his work falls on me. It's damn near impossible to jump ship now since the only jobs available are in Contracting. But who wants to take a risk on that shyt during a pandemic.

My workload has increased as well. This situation just shows how behind a lot of companies are. My boy works for a company that replaced desktops with laptops so when this all went down it took him a week and everyone was good to work from home. My company is trying to figure out how to get 900 people setup to work from home by Monday. I just laughed and poured myself another drink.

That sounds like a friend of mine who works at a bank. They we're totally caught off guard and had no plan for all these people working remotely. It's chaos at his company. Even my old employer didn't take things seriously and people in IT are working 15-20hrs in unpaid overtime to respond to all the requests.

Some of these IT Managers and CIO's should be fired for gross incompetence. The IT employees are working like dogs to make up for their lack of planning and foresight.

Those same employees will be the first one let go when they have to downsize as well. That's why I'm not doing it. I told my manager I am not working any OT and if he doesn't like it he can fire me. Their lack of planning and ensuring they had adequate resources for this is not my problem.

Working for a good company with good leadership is so underrated and why everything can't be about maxing out every single dollar you can make.

Also, feeling really grateful to be in a field that allows WfH when you have so many not knowing how they are going to pay their bills. I expect decent layoffs the more this extends but at least there is time to plan for it.

DevOps fam, How adequate are you in GO or Python? Do you feel its a necessary skill to learn or something that compliments the job and makes things a whole lot easier?

Maaaannn another reason to leave my job, every interesting gig that's open they hiring over seas in Romania :hhh:. Way cheaper to hire there. Exactly why I need to go into consulting by summer. Working for a manage service provider may not be the best thing.

Get security certs man. For most entry level position linux plus, security plus and network plus will be the basic requirements. All it takes is a bit of luck and someone to believe you. Once you get your feet in the door, then start planning your path to where you want to be. There is auditing, there is data privacy, there is risk management, cloud security, ips/ids, endpoint security, firewall etc. As you are gaining work experience, you can focus on learning where you eventually want to be in the future.

Did you end up taking it? How was the exam?

Day 1, just brought the database:mjlit:. Pushing the CIPM retake back again.
Nope. Unfortunately I did not. Got busy at work.
Switched from studying for the CRISC, to the CISSP-ISSAP.
Probably my last cert after ProgMP that I'll be taking
