So u were certified before you started the job, right? if so how'd you go about gettin certified?

Nope, I got it about two months after being employed.

Just google A+ certification... testing areas will pop up, it's about $150 for the test but if you pass the company reimburses you.

tofu hit it right on the head, nobody is going to give you access to the server room unless you have 2-3 years of support experience as well as the required certs. I've spoken with numerous recruiters in the IT industry and they have all told me the same thing, so the sooner you start the better brehs.

I gotta study for my A+ test ... I finished the course back in the middle of May, and I want to take it in the next couple of weeks. My problem is getting back into the studying mode and refreshing everything I learned in the class. :to::to::to:

welcome to the party:cheers:

if youre majoring in computer science im assuming youre doing programming? if you are i wouldn't even bother with certs. just focus on studying java, ruby and graduating. you'll be:stylin: once you graduate.

I'm not in school, any suggestions as to where to start on these? Out of all the IT/Computer science related paths out there I'm most interested in programming, or maybe computer engineering.

OSI Model only matters when you dealing with the infrastructure or Cisco? How can you possible protect a network if you dont know how traffic moves from one computer to the next?
Certain attacks can only happen at certain layers, Hackers know this and come up with attacks based off of it. I use to be on the OSI model is only good for tests, until I was shown how to come up with attacks based off the model.

Breh you do not need to know shyt about OSI model until you start dealing with network infrastructure or you doing CCNA shyt...which will teach you OSI model thoroughly. Trust, I wouldn't even be having this convo if I didn't know what the fukk I was talking about. If Network+ teaches you OSI model, great. I don't know cuz I never needed an Network+ cert. But IMO that shyt is a waste of money.

If you doing Security+ or CCNA or CISSP that shyt will go over the OSI model in depth and you'll feel stupid for wasting your time and money on Network+. As I said before...Network+ is nothing but an advanced version of A+. It's that simple. All that other shyt you're talking about is stuff that you will learn only when you get hands-on job experience. There is only so much book studying you can do.

Copped, got the book PDF style and reading it on my iPad. Generally speaking, how many weeks or months did it take y'all to prepare for the A+ exam?

A little less than 2 months if you're dedicated. Go through the Mike Myers book twice and supplement that with Prof Messor's videos and quiz questions. After you have read the book find some practice exams.

Here are some useful sites:

A+ Practical Application
CompTIA A+ Glossary of Terms A - D flashcards | Quizlet
CompTIA A+ Practice Test Questions (Exams 220-701 & 220-702)

Professor Messer's Free 220-70x CompTIA A+ Training Course | Professor Messer - CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, Certification Training

Thanks a TON, I just finished reading the first two chapters of the Mike Myers book while note taking. Hopefully I can take this exam some time in August. Very informative.
