i got a bs in computer science and a mba in MIS..currently a project coordinator for a software company...what i want to do is get into a business analyst type role in healthcare IT...one of the 2 people i know in my age range that makes 6 figs does that for a living...unless you have some sort of healthcare cert or know someone its a bytch to get into...very political

I'm learning that there are several aspects to a BA role within the Healthcare industry. You can have a position that focuses solely on requirements gathering, data analysis, or reporting. A small company may allow you to do it "all", but the larger the company the more specialized the position will be (wack). The pay is nuts though.

I'm currently using skillport to brush up on some things. I really want to focus more on Data Analysis and Reporting.

im trying to get into the IT field so would it be best to get that IT degree or would getting an A+ certification be enough to get my foot in the door and eventually work my way up the ladder by getting more Certs?

Getting an job in IT is no different than any other profession you need to network with people already in the field. If you start out at the bottom doing Hell desk type work and do an decent job they might never let you leave. You'll take tons of abuse from users while making chump change. But if you can find an company that allows you to move up in the ranks stay put because their few and far between. Most IT Departments are run by idiots who kissed ass to get their positions so don't expect an decent work environment. About the only good thing about the IT Field is if you've got hard to find skills there is always someone willing to hire you.

Either.

Currently I work on an IT helpdesk, and one of the job requirements was an associates degree (Bachelors preferred) in something IT related and at least some experience, though an A+ could probably substitute for experience in some cases depending on the company.

Normally I'd say an A+ should be enough for a helpdesk job, but in this economy job requirements are inflated, jobs are hard to get, and you'll probably have to compete with people with more experience than you for even "entry-level" jobs, so a degree might be worth it. Even if it's just an associates degree in something IT-related.

For my job, like I said, it only requires an Associates Degree, but I won out over 20 other people (my supervisor specifically said they interviewed 20 candidates including me and I was chosen) because I have a BA, and also because of a good interview. If I didn't have a BA I probably wouldn't have gotten the job, and if I didn't have a degree at all I wouldn't have even gotten an interview.

Studying for network +. Goin through the mike meyers study guide and I alreadly know most of the material from work experience (2.5 years at helpdesk). They're changing the format/material in August so I gotta take it soon. Hopefully is will be the 1st step in moving up and getting more $!

FMC Technologies to Hire 300 in Houston, VMC Consulting 600 in San Antonio | Dice Blog Network

IT Company Jobs: 300 in Houston, 600 in San Antonio
By Don Willmott | Jun 25, 2012

Technology solutions provider FMC Technologies expects to add 300 workers to its Houston operations, with more than half of those positions targeting engineers and project managers.

FMC Technologies, which employs 2,400 people in its Houston site, will be trolling for new talent when it hosts a hiring event on July 28 at 1777 Gears Rd. in Houston from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

“The focus of the career fair is to fill 160 engineers and project manager positions,” Geir Arne Skau, FMC’s Western Region Human Resources Manager, told the Houston Chronicle.

The company, named the World’s Most Admired Oil and Gas Equipment, Service Company in 2012 by Fortune magazine, designs, manufactures and services technologically sophisticated systems and equipment for the oil and gas industry.

Two hundred miles to the west in San Antonio, Texas, VMC Consulting plans to hire 600 new employees between now and Labor Day for its San Antonio contact center.

As the technology consulting and outsourcing company grows its support services for existing clients, it will add about 150 new employees a month during the next four months.

These full-time VMC jobs are Tier 1 Technical Support positions, aimed at people with contact center and technical experience. All full-time positions include benefits. By the time the hiring is complete, the contact center will have almost 900 employees.

People in Texas stay winning. :sadcam:

My sister lives in Houston, maybe I should think about relocating. Almost nobody is hiring in Michigan, I can barely even find jobs to apply for. :wow:
