Im studying now for Security+, what's the path to doing pentesting/sec?
TLDR:
Learn linux, learn some python (don’t need to be able to write your own programs, just
to recognize code and maybe fix a couple broken lines). Get kali linux. Download vulnerable
vms from vulnhub and attack them. When you get stuck, check walkthroughs. Join
hackthebox.eu. Get a premium account. Hack every box you can, starting with low to medium
rated difficulty. Get your OSCP !

this question is really based on where you are in terms of skill set. since your studying for a sec+ I'm just going to assume your fresh and new in terms of sec but correct me if i'm wrong. Once you get your sec+ I would just start looking for junior analyst positions in your area. From what I've seen this are mostly centered around schools/colleges. While your doing this you can try to get your CASP which is basically the advanced vers of the sec+ and can get you a good job on the defensive side of sec. If you get the CASP start looking for like mid level cyber security analyst jobs at this point.

Outside of certs the best way to get into pentesting is to participate in CTF challenges, and if you have the money and time go to conferences (deacon, derbycon, THOTCon, Garcon, etc..)

I don't tell anybody:lolbron:. At the same time, one is fulltime (37.5) and the other is between 30 to 37.5. Sometimes, I work a couple of hours on the weekend to make things manageable. Starting in January, I will reduce my hours at the second one and max it at 30.
I just adjust my calendar to make sure meetings don't run at the same time. I always use the ''Oh can you move this please ? I have another meeting that can't be moved :troll:'' . As soon as I get one invite, I block time in the other company calendar .

The real challenge is understanding if this is sustainable long term:lupe:, everybody is different. For me, I will work 2 contracts (Just started in September) for 2 years max and then just keep whoever pays my invoices the fastest.

RHCSA still collecting dust since I got it last September

these companies do not give 1 iota of a fukk about red hat certs

Absolutely nothing

Red Hat themselves turned me down for a tech support position...:mindblown:

yeah fukk them certs at this point, for real

:trash:

Maybe LPIC later on down the line, but I'm switching my focus towards cloud and networking from here n out. Tired of this VDI Administration shyt; My last couple of roles, I've been sitting around doing barely any work and resorting to home labbing to get my hands-on experience

MF really out here paying people to ride the clock. All these jobs promise you'll get exposures to all these different technologies, but as soon as I get the job...nothing but meetings, nothing, an occasional incident ticket or change request, more nothing, collect check, rinse and repeat.

Totaling 15 minutes of work for a whole week, let that sink in.

Working on securing 2nd full-time gig, probably aim for a decent paying level 1 or 2 desktop gig , that way I can at least get some action. MF use to say get out of helpdesk ASAP but that's where you'll get all your experience...albeit you wont be clearing 6 figs or anywhere near it. Seems like SysAdmin roles are where careers really stagnate.

these companies just be wanting warm bodies just n case some shyt happens. mostly alot of down time. this has been my experience with 3 different jobs so far. cant complaint about the easy money though

but it's becoming clearer that I need to supercharge my grind because I'm more than likely not going to get experience anywhere at this rate unless I home lab.

I love free money but fukk!!!:snoop:

So I made a thread earlier today, but I figured I'd just post it in here.

I'm lookin to do a complete 180 as far as career work, and I'm leaning towards the tech world.

Where we stand today.. what are ya'lls opinions on best tech divisions moving forward? I'm gonna break it down real quick.

I'll be starting from square one. I really dont have much experience, but I'm down to learn as much as I can, as quick as I can. I'll be real with you.. I dont have all the time in the world to train, and get multiple degrees. I'm gonna need some sort of income. Obviously the more the better. I've got some savings that can hold me over if I land an entry level position, making shyt wages. What are your thoughts on what I should look into?

IT?
Cyber security?
Coding?

Anything else?

I'd like to be able to take whatever route I'm on.. and some day be able to work for myself. So if that can help with your recommendations.. then cool

I'm legit at square one.. so any help would be dope.

Edit: I'm 43 now.. so that's another reason I cant rely on taking a 3-4 year course, only to then have to start the job hunting process.

I'm studying to get my OSCP rn. Working through tryhackme and hackthebox rooms until I buy pwk with 90 day labs at the end of the year. Hoping to take it in March. I've heard some crazy stories so I just want to be ready :lupe:

I have passed the Google data analytics cert. They give you a quick overview on different topics but you will not be ready for an entry level data analytics job with just that course alone. Also almost no employers even know about that certification. I think you should take the Microsoft cert since employers will recognize it and you will be learning Power BI
