Ok. Well, what if you don't exist in anyone else's story? What if you are excluded from media narrative entirely?

If you don't exist in anyone else's story, it's perfectly fine to tell your own story.

need to be careful with this argument.

The point I'm making is that this is Issa Rae's story, her experiences, her perceptions, the solution for people who feel left out is to tell their own stories where they have full creative control.

That's a question better answered by the creators of Black media, your writing partner would be a great person to ask.

Who is forcing Black creators to add people they don't interact with into their art for mass appeal and why don't those Black creators simply refuse to compromise their art by adding these characters?
Black people typically don't support black speculative fiction enmass. So in order to make their bones they have to compromise. They seem to be the only ones who have to do this. But the same people who they have to compromise for have hood novel reading groups. My writing partner is influenced by tumblr...so take that as you will.

I agree with your last statement. I don't support her and this is the last time I will. The novel I'm working on will be my vision and in my vision black men aren't bums and failures.

Yes. We're aware of all of that. It's an underdog story. We don't know what led him here and we're not sure why he's in such a state we will find out though. I personally wish his character started out a success coming back home.
But why is this just an "underdog story" while Issa rayes show needs to be stopped? Her show is about the struggles of dating up until I assume she finds the right man for her, a "boy meets girl after ups and downs" story, typical. there isn't any white men in the trailer so I assume this show will focus on black men and black relationships Which by nature can be offensive to watch at times just like Atlanta is but I think that's what keeps it real, funny at times and balanced. From what I see though these black men that she's encountering may be a lot to manage and fall into certain stereotypes in certain aspects of their character but they aren't stereotypes in other aspects of their portrayals either which is very similar to Atlanta.

I don't necessarily disagree but this assumes the resources for people to tell their stories are readily accessible when we know this isn't the case which is why White supremacist also use the same arguments re: Lena Dunham.

The whole point of that scene was white dudes think they have n-word privileges around their "nerdy" black friends but wouldn't dare say it in front of a group of "real nikkas."

The show goes out of its way to emphasize that point later in the episode.
But even though that was the point of the scene is it impossible to conceive that that image could be pigeonholed and be seen as offensive regardless of the point? Just like certain aspects of Issa Rae's show is being in this thread?

I don't think it needs to be stopped? I'm just not supporting it. Cause it's not my reality. Even when I was broke I was ambitious. I'm not some bum ass boyfriend who has no drive. Earn, has drive so I see myself in him.

The show is going to end with her kissing a CAC, fireworks in the background, in the far distance a Black man being arrested with Aaliyah "Try Again" playing.

Standing ovation from Black Feminists, articles on Ebony, Essence, Madam Noire, BeyondBlackWhite, BearBuiltLegacy, Blavity etc. Talk shows, Meet and Greets, Summer Events, Fan Clubs.... Servers crash on Tumblr. Shea butter shortages, Avocados everywhere!!!

As of right now, you've got TWO television shows that I can think of that dont go out of their way to portray black men as interracial dating, thuggish, c00nish losers, unable and unwilling to become successful within society. Survivors Remorse and Black-ish.
I told people awhile ago that survivors remorse is a black feminist show.

The problem with any medium of art isn't stereotypes....cause stereotypes will always exist...and a stereotype is just a shortcut.

It is the humanity fleshed out in the characters...

Shows like Being Mary Jane, Scandal, and Insecure...has fukked up stereotypical Black women...but they get to be full human beings. And they get to be "strong" and "independent".

While the men are cardboard stereotypes...

Atlanta has stereotypical Black men...but they are full human beings. And they aren't really even looking for someone to help them, they just looking for a way out....which is something we as Black men can relate to.

We as Black men just gotta realize that Black women have a perception of us that is similar to the White man.
