I find it interesting that people think Lawrence and Issa can't co-exist on the show without this inevitability that they'll get back together.

It would be refreshing where Issa, Lawrence, Molly, Daniel, etc can all have their respective stories told without the need for them to ALWAYS be linked to one another.

I think the writers are capable of that but will they?

Who knows.

I don’t think you can do it a 1/2 hour show. I also don’t think you can have Lawrence in the show w/o linking him to Issa. She’s the main character. For or better or worse all the characters revolve around their relationship to her. If you take 8 minutes to focus on Lawrence per episode without how his story connects to Issa you have to build a supporting cast for a supporting character.

I'm unsure how much planning went into the character development and overall plot development from the season 1 pilot till now, however, it seems like Lawrence's popularity wasn't expected.

'Insecure' seems to be an extension of 'Awkward Black Girl' in a lot of ways and I'd assume that the focus was meant to be Issa, with Molly in tandem.

But Lawrence's arc really resonated with the audience, men in particular and thus, perhaps the creator's vision for the show adjusted?

Hmm...

On one hand, it definitely seems Issa lacked foresight and underestimated the impact of her character cheating on Lawrence when he did nothing to deserve infidelity. The reception of characters and the entire series is different had that not happened. His void hadn't been filled since his departure.

On the other hand, he was always presented as one of three main characters. His return was kinda predictable.

I didn't see the swerve coming but I really felt like they gave Lawrence's character closure at the end of last season. Let's see how this plays out. I hope they just keep them as friends and they both move forward separately.

Yes, I really enjoyed Lawrence's story lines last season. From his threesome, getting pulled over, life at a tech company, dating a new chic even tho you still holding on to issues from your previous relationship and looking for a new spot with Chad. I didn't think I would miss his character as much as I did.

This 100%

This show can really benefit from being an hour long to give their characters more screen time.

The PROBLEM with season 3 is that Issa is the weakest primary character on her own show yet is an even stronger focus than prior yesrs. I'm not sure if the writers are aware of this or what, but most women and men I know cite Molly as their favorite female character. And obviously Lawrence has a huge following. Lawrence not being around and Molly taking a back seat story wise compared to Issa is why this year has been whack.

The show's strength was never her, but Molly and him and the cinematography, and the music, and the writing.

Issa is dead ass my least favorite thing about the show haha.

Now with Lawrence back I'm hoping these last 3 episodes are strong.

Also, does any one else notice that the show does a really, really bad job of showing why Issa is so attractive to desirable men?

Daniel, Lawrence, Nathan, a good few of them dudes she tried to keep in her "hoe-tation", all would have no problem getting women and such was shown. What does Issa offer? She isn't particularly smart or fashionable, she isn't particularly engaging, obviously comes off pretty selfish and inconsiderate...

Molly has a shyt ton of problems, but when a nikka is feeling her, you at least get it. She has an independent woman vibe that is sexy, she dresses her ass off, she's witty and a good conversationalist, shes shown she can hang out with the fellas and be chill.

The show needs to do a better job of showing her redeeming and attractive qualities.

Eh. Daniel was the dude from around the way who was her first love. That ones understandable. Lawrence apparently got with her really early in his 20s while he was on the comeup. That long history explains that.

I don’t Nathan has shown much interest in her beyond sex yet. As for the other guys, she was just a date, and likely part of their rotation.
