Good win for the Celtics. It was ugly and I was thiiiiiiiis close to turning off the game but I'm glad I saw our 19-0 run. If nothing else, we're a resilient bunch. And Horford looked GREAT tonight.
According to BasketballReference.com, Friday's game [against the Spurs] marked only the 40th time in the past 53 years that the Celtics have failed to reach double digits in free throw attempts. It was also the second such instance in three days for a Boston team that shot just eight free throws in a win over Brooklyn on Wednesday.
The Celtics rank 26th in the NBA with a free throw attempt rate of 0.237 (the metric is based on free throw attempts per field goal attempted). They rank 25th in the NBA in free throw attempts per game, averaging just 20.4.
Considering his team posted an offensive rating of 106.2, slightly above its ninth-ranked season average of 105.9, against a very good San Antonio team, Celtics coach Brad Stevens didn't seem overly concerned about Boston's lack of free throw attempts. As Stevens noted Saturday, "Just because you don’t get to the free throw line doesn’t mean you’re not attacking right and getting inside-out and all that other stuff. ... I felt good about our attack."
