WALTHAM -- After getting bludgeoned by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, Isaiah Thomas realizes the Boston Celtics need more talent -- and he won't be upset if the pursuit of a roster upgrade keeps him from receiving a contract extension this summer.
Though Thomas is eligible for an extension this offseason, which could come with a pay raise for next year, the Celtics can only offer one if they stay under the salary cap. Realistically, they would prefer not to. They have made no secret of their plans to pursue another star, and are expected to chase free agent Gordon Hayward.
For Thomas, that represents a win-lose. He acknowledges his team needs to improve, but an agreement to use the financial flexibility on someone else would kill his hopes of a short-term pay raise.
Thankfully for the Celtics, the star seems to understand the situation. His payday is more likely to come next summer, when he will hit unrestricted free agency.
"(An extension) means more money? Yeah, I would love that," he smiled Friday before an exit interview with the Celtics front office. "But if it don't happen, I'm the last person to be bothered by that. I know everything happens for a reason, so when my time comes, I know it will come and I'll be - God will bless me."
After making second team All-NBA, Thomas' contract is actually set to decrease in its final year. His $6.26 million, which will count as one of the league's best bargains, is similar to what Boston will pay the top overall pick during his rookie season.
Thomas might resent his current contract, which drastically underpays him, but realizes he's set to cash in next summer regardless.
"That time will come," he said. "Whatever happens, happens. I've proved myself. The world knows what I bring to the table and I can't do anything to control anything else. So whatever happens this summer with contracts, it happens. If not then we'll wait until next summer and then we'll see where we go."
Thomas added: "We need the best possible player that's gonna help us win, and I'm with that. Anything Danny and this organization need me to do to help bring even more talent to this city, I'm all for that. I want to win a championship, and being so close to getting to the finals, that makes you want it that much more. I'm all help if they need it. I'll be around.
"We definitely need more. It was obvious. But shoot, the No. 1 seed and getting to the Eastern Conference Finals, like, we had a pretty good year. But to take that next step, which is the Finals, and to do whatever we can to beat Cleveland, we definitely need more. So I don't know what those guys are going to do with this team but I would love to see everybody back and add a piece or more."
