Toriyama was a passive guy who based Gohan on his own personality.

He had an abusive father who he based Vegeta on.

Gohan was intended to take Goku's place but the fans had an outlash so Goku remained the lead.

The fan backlash has always been a widespread myth. Toriyama said he wanted to make Gohan the hero but decided his character just wasn't suited for it. Gohan was at the very top of the fan polls, even ABOVE Goku after the Cell saga ended.

As far as Gohan goes I'm quoting Toriyama himself. He was supposed to replace Goku during the Cell Saga, Toriyama faced outlash, abandoned the idea, and made him a p*ssy.

Nah, that's rumors (at least partially). It's true that he planned to have Gohan be the main character after the Cell Saga, but he didn't change his mind because of fans.

He basically said he changed his mind because he realized Gohan didn't make a good protagonist. Hard to have a main character in an action Shonen that never wants to fight anybody
