He's been GOOD ENOUGH, but hasn't been better than the competition. I think it's cool to be nominated though.
Titanic
...nah, I thought he was for sure going to get one for The Aviator
I'd be honored. If I lost to the people he's lost to, but to be put in the same category as like Matt McConaughey in DBC, that's dopeExactly. That's what it boils down to
Well if they never got over it he wouldn't even be nominated for stuff and he's been nominated several times since then. He's just always nominated in years where he doesn't have the momentum. No one was going to beat Matty Ice last year, not a soul. Just like he wasn't going to beat Jamie or Forest or Tommy Lee Jones. He just turned 40, he's got plenty of time to win something. It's just bad luck of the draw
If you are constantly killing it acting wise in the most critically acclaimed movies don't they have to nominate you?
Tom Lee Jones in the Fugitive is not head and shoulders better that what he did for Gilbert Grape
Sean Penn in Milk is not head shoulders above what he did in Revolutionary Road
And Chris Waltz wasn't better than him in Django
I didn't see Dallas Buyers Club so I can't speak on it but uh he did great work in True Detective and lost the Emmy. Where was the Matty Ice momentum for that the same friggin' year?! More people saw him in that than Dallas Buyers Club.
Gilbert Grape, Aviator, Django, Wolf of Wall Street and Revolutionary Road.
Unless Dicaprio destroys his current superstar image he isn't going to win an Oscar until he's and regardless of what he does and who's in his nomination category. The gawd isn't begging and campaigning for one either, so.
He will definitely be given one down the line though.
Breh you have no idea how it works then as far as nominations go. You have to be pushed by your studio first off to be nominated, just like politics go. So if he wasn't nominated for revolutionary road its due to the studio not pushing him or if they did he didn't make the cut. The Weinstein's chose Waltz over him for Django assuming if they nominated both of them, they'd cancel each other out and neither one of them would win. They went with the more obvious supporting role.
But anytime you're nominated, it's a process just like politics. Then once you get in the field, its up to the voters to decide if you're going to win or not. Sean Penn got nominated but it's also a more flashy role than what Leo did in Road and the flashier performances tend to come away with the win. He wasn't going to win going against a legend in Tommy Lee Jones especially when he's a kid who you assume is going to get multiple chances to win. Plus it helped that the fugitive was one of the biggest movies of that year.
And Matty Ice's momentum I'm assuming couldn't match the desire to reward Breaking Bad for its last season :whoknows: But it's the narrative that works too. Here's a guy in Matty Ice who was down in the dumps and had one of the best years a male actor has had in a while, or even a good couple years really. There's the stuff he did in Lincoln Lawyer, then Mud, then the cameo in Wolf of Wall St, then Dallas Buyers Club and then True Detective. The narrative and story of the comeback of a guy who seemed destined to be in rom com prison, then dug himself out of that to put in great performances consistently? Yeah that's going to win plus it's just a great performance. The acting bloc is the biggest bloc in the academy and they're generally going to reward physical transformations like his in that movie also. Leo's going to get his, you cats are acting like he's going to retire in two years. He JUST turned 40, he's got a long long career in front of him
This thread isn't about 'Hollywood 'politics', we are discussing if the nicca actually deserves an Oscar based on his performances. the answer is yes IMO.
'Clearly' is the point of disagreement. He definitely should have a couple of times.Yeah of course he deserves one but he's always been nominated in years where he was clearly not going to win. Which was my initial point. Dude is a great actor of course he's going to deserve one and win one
The Weinstein's knew they could only push one of them because they'd csncel both out if they were nominated and there's no way they were going to win best actor that year when DDL was up for Lincoln.
