MJ is out of reach, end of story on that.

But Luka and Zion could POSSIBLY hit that Lebron tier.

No to Giannis, people who didn’t watch basketball know Lebron and knew who Kobe was. He’s the best player but people who don’t watch basketball don't knows who Giannis is, not sure why.

Because he's a foreigner with a hard name to say, that puts a cap on how big his star can get. Luka as well to an extent though they're gonna try to push him through.

If Dirk was an American he'd be way more respected than he already is.

Zion.

I remember the hype that lebron and kobe had when they first joined and zions hype reminds me of them.
Zion's hype isn't anywhere near what LeBron got. It's way above the hype Kobe got though. People legit wanted Kobe to fail.

No-one is as big as MJ and never will be... Mike's retros still selling more than your favorite player favorites player kicks...
Has nothing to do with Jordan the player though or his insane level of popularity. Jordan's have always been a "status symbol" in black america.

Based on card sales, it's Giannis and Zion. I know the media isn't on Giannis' nuts like past greats but his stock is incredibly high with the people buying cards. :manny:

Any player would can get about 4-6 championships will become an icon. Lebron has 3 but he went to the finals for so long and he was a high school phenom.

If you're a high school phenom, you have to come in and match or exceed the hype off rip. Put up crazy stats. Then win some rings when it's your time. Zion, luka, Trae, jalen green, emoni etc all have a shot if they win

Basically Tom Brady ain’t Tom Brady if doesn’t *win those rings . He’d be Joe Flacco.

:yeshrug:

..:mjgrin:Ok not joe Flacco but you get the idea

* bill belly ( the defence ) and the league /refs deserve their credit also

Yeah it's not as big but the hype is there and it's more than any recent player.

I will say the next player to successfully go straight from highschool to the league after the one and done rule is gonna be a megastar cause all eyes will be on him.

And if lamelo turns into a goat caliber player, his brand is gonna be special. He's been in the public eye before his growth spurt, all the ups and downs with bbb and lavar. If he's super nice with it, his story will be wild

Kobe was not a cultural icon before his ring

And even so, one can become a cultural icon

Was federer a cultural icon before he won a bunch of grand slams?

Zion or Giannis can win six rings and won’t be as big as Bron, Jordan and Kobe are/were

this isn’t just related to sports but other forms of entertainment such as music. It’s a different time periodt it’s rare people get that famous anymore. The top 20 famous people in the world outside of maybe Lebron Obama and Beyonce have been famous for decades

You know how big someone has to be to be as famous as Lebron, Jordan or Kobe. Never happening again. NBA already went global thanks to those three so it’s pretty much maxed out popularity wise anyway

Another factor to remember is that although those three transcended sports, never forget most of the world is football(soccer) fans.

Zion has the potential. If Giannis leads a dynasty and/or plays for a big market he might get the fanfare one day. Don't know about anyone else in the NBA, there are a few high schoolers that I could see have that potential (Bates, Green) but we'll see

Exactly. People just stay in denial when it comes to Kobe
People always sleep on China but that country has more people playing basketball than the US has people (or so I've read) and Kobe is probably the most popular basketball player (and probably athlete) in China, at least behind Yao but I don't even think Yao has that kind of appeal

That says more about the timing of peaking right when the league was focusing on building interest in China but you could say that about anyone. Even MJ came at a great time for him to become the cultural icon that he is
