With MJ,Kobe and LeBron they were known before NBA. Jordan had the shot in college .Kobe was prep to pro ,took Brandy to prom .Lebrons games were shown in high school,Chosen One cover etc . The average casual has to know these players in advance . This may come off hilarious to some and I know he isn't current yet but if Lamelo Ball starts his career hot and is in right market he could be one.

Kobe was not a cultural icon before his ring

And even so, one can become a cultural icon

Was federer a cultural icon before he won a bunch of grand slams?

I’m speaking on basketball

By the second year when Kobe had the Afro and made the all star team. The ASG matchup at The Garden was A BIG fukkING DEAL to people...No differently than Zion vs Bron. Kobe represented the young guard. He was the supposed heir apparent

I was there. Let’s not lie lol

Any player would can get about 4-6 championships will become an icon. Lebron has 3 but he went to the finals for so long and he was a high school phenom.

If you're a high school phenom, you have to come in and match or exceed the hype off rip. Put up crazy stats. Then win some rings when it's your time. Zion, luka, Trae, jalen green, emoni etc all have a shot if they win

I will say the internet has made it weird. Lebron was the first High school athlete followed by ESPN. Kobe was one of the first HSer who made the transition into the nba (was the youngest player to ever play in the NBA at one point). And Mike was the first mega commercialized athlete.

Now everyone of these highschoolers has a brand. Multiple YouTube videos. Borderline shoe deals. Youd think I'd help the hype but itsi almost made it oversaturated. Its gonna be harder for a players actual brand to stand out in 2020.

Fair. I forgot about AI. Definitely iconic. Would I say he's on MJ, Kobe, Bron level? Nah. Him and steph are on a different tier a notch below

Kobe over took him in popularity as the 00s went on but a case could be made AI was more popular than Kobe for a sec.

Let’s not act like AI wasn’t seen as the anti- Kobe
There was a lot of pushback to Kobe for some years

Somewhere on an Xbox
Lebrin and kobe not on mj level.

So let's eliminate them too.

None of these guys will be mj.
As they laxk thr skill level. Plus will not do the discoveryzone needed to ramp.
Plus have no real attention to playing above the rim.
Or technical mastery oland full conversion of every shot in basketball.
from being open to getting open under extreme duress.

Plus no willingness to showcase their above the rim ability consistently.
From the multiple dunk contests wins to actual in game actualization.
To defeat the eastern seaboard misappropriation of erroneously placing bird over bill russell.

They're both on MJ's level, fam. There isn't anything separating the GOATS skill-wise.

Giannis is having a historical season but for some reason he's not as big as he's supposed to be. James Harden seems to be a bigger star than him.

Curry was on his way to be on that level, but KD going to the Warriors kinda stole his shine.

Zion has the potential. Luka too and maybe Giannis if he wins this year.
