Is Spike Lee overrated? Just think about it.

It had me thinking about him.

I think he's a good director but he is somewhat overrated. His filmography is decent on average with occasional really good films but plenty of mediocre ones too. He's tried too hard to be topical and his films often get marred by self-righteous preachiness. he has made one masterpiece, a handful of good films, a bunch of average ones and a few stinkers. As an artist I think he's pretty hit and miss.

He's sort of where he belongs imo. His name gives his projects some buzz, but it's not like he's a Spielberg/Fincher/Tarantino/Anderson/Scorsese....he's in the 2nd tier, but he's been there so long it feels like he should be better than he is

I remember he made a Kobe Bryant short film for ESPN some years back which was so boring and pointless I stopped watching after like 20 minutes.

There's reason why he couldn't make a good film like he used to unlike other directors. Whatever his new upcoming films and you would be like "He's better not disappoint me or let's see" like you don't believe in him anymore.

The 25th Hour was kinda good, tho. I dunno if his life's goal is to keep it hood and not be a hollywood director, but he's succeeding at it.

More good movies than bad, 4 great ones imo (DTRT, Malcolm X, 25th Hour and 4 Little Girls) I still think he has another great movie in him.
